Delaware Republican Committee Hosts Fundraiser with Auction of Labrador Retriever Puppy
What is going on with Republicans and dogs? First Mitt Romney boasted how he strapped the family furkid into a dog crate on the top of the family vehicle for a twleve hour trip. Now Delaware Republicans are auctioning off a Black Lab puppy to raise money at a fundraiser next week.
Someone needs to tell these folks that auctioning off a puppy is soooo last century. Puppies need to be carefully placed in loving homes, not auctioned off like a piece of jewelry or a painting.
I know there are lots of caring Republican Dogsters so I don’t think this has anything to do with being a Republican but, hey, can someone talk to these people?
I am not promoting or denigrating any political party but come on, Sussex County Republicans. Was Pennsylvania’s Rick Santorum the only public member of your party that cared about animals?
Here’s the announcement on the Delaware GOP site. It doesn’t mention the puppy but the tip came from very reputable rescuers.
If the Sussex County and Delaware Republicans want to bark in and tell us it ain’t so, I’d love to hear from them!

We live a State down from Delaware, about an hour south of Long Neck. The humane societies around here are always filled with Labs that get dropped off because their people are not prepared for the wrecking balls that a growing Lab can turn into.
It is wrong to auction one which might be “purchased” by some tipsy partygoer with no idea of what they are taking on.
Hopefully the pup will end up with experienced owners who will love and cope with 80 some lbs. of hijinks!
[...] by liberalgeek under local R’s I just came across this dog lovers post about a Delaware Republican fundraiser that raised their ire. Apparently they are auctioning off a puppy (a Black Lab, purportedly). The complaint is that [...]
Okay I am a republican myself. I just got done writing a email to the delaware republican party. We have enough trouble without someone stupidly thinking this was a good idea. I as a republican…..appoligise.
Scott,
Thanks for barking in. I don’t think this is a Republican thing: I think its a stupid human trick thing.
Let’s encourage all of our political parties to get on board in regards to animal welfare!
This is definitely not focused on one political party or another. Sadly, many high profile auctions use this tactic in their fundraising. I’ve commented to several larger auctioneers about the practice, and they are starting to shy away from it. From their perspective, it’s something that can truly bring in the bigger bucks b/c of the ‘awe’ factor and novelty of the ‘auction item’ being so different from everything else in the auction catalog. But, that is precisely why it’s such a poor choice for an auction item! The fervent bidding does not take into claim whether the family is prepared for a puppy, no matter how cute, lovable or popular a breed.
Please continue to write to your own local political offices as well as other non-animal charities that host auctions in your area to inform them of the poor choice a puppy in an auction catalog would be.
Thanks!
