Thanks to Liz M. for passing on this plea for help. If you live near this shelter or you have a shelter that can take some of these furbabies, please consider doing so.

Subject: Warren County Animal Control, Indiana-URGENT Dogs!!!

Hello, my name is Liz Vincent and most of you are probably familar with my plight here in Warren County, Indiana. For those of you who may not be I’ll give a brief explanation of my situation. I am the sole employee of the “shelter” here. Our building is just a small, simple pole barn. It has no insulation or heat and very limited resources (not even a mailbox, garbage service, a phone, a bathroom or a place to wash your hands!) which is why I use the term “shelter” very loosely when I describe the place! It sits out in the country on a former landfill.

I have 8 kennels and I do all aspects of the care here by myself. I pick up the strays, take them to the shelter, feed, water, clean and ultimately, I am the one that either transports them someplace safe or has to hold them for euthanasia and then incinerate them. I have done a few adoptions but I am not allowed to advertise dogs available in the local papers because the powers that be, “…do not want a Humane Society here.”

I have done this job for a few years now and only keep it because if I don’t I know it will return to 100% kill. I work nights, full-time as a 911 dispatcher and that sometimes makes scheduling things harder due to my sleep patterns. I also hold another part time job but I haven’t been working it much in the last few months due to the impending arrival of my first child. I am in my 8th month of pregnancy and this is one reason why all the dogs at my shelter are extremely urgent.

I’m getting close to starting maternity leave and I have been instructed to make sure the kennel is empty before I leave, one way or another. Therefore, these dogs are all considered urgent but especially so are the male black lab X’s as they have been here a VERY long time now. The male JRT had been here awhile too really. Please find pics and descriptions below. I am also starting to get VERY limited on dates I’ll be available to help with transport so please contact me ASAP to make arrangements. To further complicate things I have to leave town rather unexpectedly for the weekend of Nov 30th-Dec 3rd so there will be no one to care for the dogs during that time. I’d like to get as many of these 8 out as possible before then for obvious reasons. My hands will be tied at that point.

I don’t normally get many small dogs in but this time I have 3. I have no doubt that people will be willing and able to help them so special focus needs put on the bigger guys if at all possible! If you have the space PLEASE consider one of the lab mixes the pit bull or the border collie cross!!!!

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like more info on any of the dogs listed below. As always, any help is very much appreciated!

Thank you,

-Liz Vincent

P.S. I also have a beautiful and very sweet chocolate pit bull male that needs a safe place to go. I just don’t have a picture of him yet. He is another one that won’t do good in real cold weather though. He is a dog that has obviously been housebroken as he hates to mess his kennel.

hi, liz, bless your heart. i just read about how you are single handingly trying to help stray dogs in your area. i am also a major animal lover. anyway, i am the person from valpo that was traveling on hwy 63 on dec. 23, 2007 to princeton, indiana that spotted the lost mastiff. it just broke my heart, so i turned around down the road and went back. it would not come to me, although it did turn around when i whistled. i went to several homes trying to find someone to help me, but no one was at home. i called 911 and the dispatcher was so kind and contacted officer evans. he came to where i was parked and then called animal control. i waited awhile longer, but finally had to leave to be with my parents that are in a nursing home in princeton. i needed to get there to feed my dad. anyway, i am still just sick about this dog. i know it must belong to someone and is lost. i talked to mike cronk and he was such a nice person, too. he called to see if you were able to get the dog, but told me you were unable to do so. today i am still wondering about this dog. were you ever able to get it? if so, do you have a contact that could check to see if it has a chip in place to identify it? i will be going back through on saturday on my way home. i gave officer evans some money to buy a bag of food to put out if you were unable to catch it. i know it is starving. it looked so thin and tired when i saw it. i will bring more food in case i see it on my way back. i know you are so busy, but if you have a chance to write to me and let me know what has happened to this dog, i would so appreciate it. also, my cell phone number is 219-508-0168. my home phone number is 219-465-0986. call collect. thanks, liz. again, bless your heart!! i am very angry that warren county does not think it is necessary to try to help these poor animals that are abandomed or lost!!!!
