Bobby leads pedigree chums on dog walk of fame
FAMOUSLY loyal hound Greyfriars Bobby was among the stars of the silver screen inducted in to the world’s first Dog Walk of Fame.

The dog, whose story was the basis for a notoriously syrupy Disney movie, was commemorated with a plaque and a bench in London’s Battersea Park.

Other canine stars included Gromit, of the Oscar-winning animated Wallace and Gromit films, the crime-busting collie Lassie, and Fang from the Harry Potter films.

Bullseye from Oliver, Toto from The Wizard Of Oz, and Chance and Shadow of Homeward Bound were also recognised.

A shortlist of 15 dogs was chosen by a panel of film and dog experts before film fans and dog lovers voted for their favourite six canine movie stars. Tintin’s dog Snowy was on the shortlist but failed to make the final six.

Battersea Park was chosen because it is near the famous dogs’ home. The Dog Walk of Fame inductees were being unveiled by The Kennel Club, and more dogs will be added to the hall of fame every year.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “Dogs play a very important role in our lives, through their companionship, unconditional love and rewarding relationship they give us.

“It is fantastic to see that this is felt the world over through the recognition given by the film industry, and the number of these films that are box office hits prove how much love the public have for dogs in general.”

The top dogs were voted for by viewers of Sky Movies. Bobby the Skye terrier guarded his master’s grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard for 14 years from 1858 to his death in 1872.
