What is going on with Republicans and dogs? First Mitt Romney boasted how he strapped the family furkid into a dog crate on the top of the family vehicle for a twleve hour trip. Now Delaware Republicans are auctioning off a Black Lab puppy to raise money at a fundraiser next week.
Someone needs to tell these folks that auctioning off a puppy is soooo last century. Puppies need to be carefully placed in loving homes, not auctioned off like a piece of jewelry or a painting.
I know there are lots of caring Republican Dogsters so I don’t think this has anything to do with being a Republican but, hey, can someone talk to these people?

Here’s a reminder to us all to check homes around us that have been foreclosed on, especially if you have seen pets there before the families left. I have blogged about this before but it bears repeating as foreclosures hit every part of the US.

If calendars are on your gift list, how about these calendars with impressive, cuddly, sweet, beautiful big dogs? Lucy’s furmom, Nikki, is very busy getting out the good word on Pitties and other misunderstood big breeds. Part of her mission is Howll911’s Good Dogs Calendar.

Hot off the presses — three new anti-BSL “Good Dogs” calendars for 2008, each featuring a bevy of all-new breed ambassadors!
Breeds and breed mixes represented in the new 2008 calendars are Pitties, Staffies, Rotties, Dobes, Bulldogs, Huskies, Wolfdogs, Mastiffs and more. At least one Dogster pup that we know of is featured, Daisy Mae and possibly more, as we posted liberally on the Dogster forums announcing our call for submissions. To all those Dogsters who sent in photos, thank you so much for your submissions! And if your pupster’s pic didn’t make it into this year’s calendars, keep trying; we are already accepting submissions for next year! Photos and your dog’s info should be emailed to calendar2009@howl911.com.

If you live near Nashville, Tennessee please keep an eye out for this missing furbaby. Her family thinks Sweetie may have been stolen and sold to a puppy mill.
On a side note, this is another excellent reason to have furbabies, especially females, spayed so that if they are stolen they will be let go or dropped at shelters because no one can make money off their bodies.
Here is a link to the FindSweetie site.

Dogs Can Classify Complex Photos In Categories Like Humans Do
ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2007) — Like us, our canine friends are able to form abstract concepts. Friederike Range and colleagues from the University of Vienna in Austria have shown for the first time that dogs can classify complex color photographs and place them into categories in the same way that humans do. And the dogs successfully demonstrate their learning through the use of computer automated touch-screens, eliminating potential human influence.
