I highly agree with Bobbe and Sara. If this a trend, that means that there are probably many people adopting dogs who shouldn't be or don't really have the time or otherwise to successfully keep the dog happy and healthy. I made the mistake of impulse-adopting and learned my lesson. Thankfully it wasn't so bad that we couldn't keep the dog, but I was in way over my head.

The most incredible dog I ever had was a pound puppy. She lived her life with me for 17 years. Most of the dogs I have shared my life with were pound dogs or ones I rescued myself, and they have all been special souls. I can honestly say each of those furkin knew they had been saved and in their spirit was a special gratitude.

This sounds wonderful. I own a pound dog, and he sure is a one of a kind dog! I'm glad that people are seeing what wonderful dogs rescue ones can be.

Not really wanting to be one to throw water on what could be a truly wonderful trend, but I sincerely hope that this doesn't end up being the same sort of thing as when a certain breed gets profiled in a movie and everyone wants one -- without thinking it through. Then the dogs become throwaways and end up in shelters or worse.

My Sara is a shelter rescue, and my Akita, Dalton, who crossed the bridge in 2000, came from Akita Rescue.

I personally would have no problem if there was no breeding for 5 years or so and then perhaps the shelter population would really decrease. Either that, or probably more realistically, mandatory spay/neuter except for special breeder license. Where I live, licensing is $10 a year for a spayed or neutered dog, but goes up to $100 for an intact dog.
