Batman’s Burt Ward Helps Large Breed Dogs Through Gentle Giants Rescue

(Joy note — It appears that Gentle Giants Rescue is not what it appears. Please read through the Comments for important information. Thanks to all the rescuers who have barked in!)
I always thought Robin looked like a really good guy! Turns out that Burt Ward has moved from saving humans on TV to saving dogs in real life. Now this is my kind of hero!!!!
And notice that Gentle Giants has its own line of completely made in America dog food! Looks tempting!
Thanks to Donna for barking in this good news.
Hi. The actor who played Robin in Batman (Burt Ward) now operates a rescue for large breed dogs like Great Danes. It is called Gentle Giants, and it has a website. I thought it might be nice to mention it on your home page on a day when you have some extra space (you may already have it listed somewhere on your site, but I couldn’t find it).
I think a lot of dogster members would enjoy knowing about it. I always like to read about the good things people do for “furry people”.

it sounds like a nice thing..but this group actually sells puppies from breeders for a profit… they are contracted with several large breed dog breeders to produce pups for them to sell on their site…. rescues do not promote breeding
Kara
I looked through the site and it clearly states on the front page that Gentle Giants Rescue does not support breeding of any type. If you have other info please bark it in.
I have also heard that this rescue is less than reputable… I forget where though. I can do some digging and see if I find it.
Stacie,
Please let us all know if there are problems. I’d also like to hear from folks who are happy with Gentle Giants. If there are two sides, let’s hear ‘em.
There is a website that tells the other side of the story about Gentle Giants “Rescue”
http://www.gentlegiantnews.com/
There’s a lot to read but I don’t think Dogster wants to be promoting this type of rescue.
As a member of both the Great Dane Rescue of the Commonwealth, and the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue I have become quite familiar with Burt Ward’s Gentle Giant “Rescue”.
They breed puppies, and have at least 5 pages at a time promoting and advertising them. They have even bred different large breeds to create something different.
This is NOT what rescue is about. Rescues alter all intact males/females to prevent over population.
Also, only the best of the best should ever be bred with extensive health testing taking place.
If anyone is truly interested in specific breed rescue, visit http://www.akc.org and select your breed. The parent clubs will have links to the true rescue groups.

Thanks Joy for adding your note! It’s a sad world when you have to research rescues as much as your have to research breeders.
Stacie,
I sooooo agree with you!
On the bright side, we can share information on blogs like this and reveal the bad apples. Maybe we can help some unsuspecting would-be dog adopters from getting involved with the wrong people.
Thanks to everyone who has barked in!

Follow ups
For some reason, they’re all courts-related today:
Burt Ward, aka Robin from TV’s “Batman,” had his defamation suit against Barbara Laird of Westminster and two out-of-county defendants tossed out by Judge Jamoa Moberly last week.
Laird had bought a Great Dane from Ward’s dog-rescue operation out in Norco. Ward took exception to the brand of food Laird started to feed the beast and threatened to take it away. That prompted Laird and the two others to criticize Ward on a variety of Web sites, which Ward says cost him business. So he sued.
Not only did he lose, but under a California law designed to protect free speech, Ward is also likely to be held liable for the defendants’ attorney fees, which are going to be somewhere well north of $50,000.
For pure spectacle, I was looking forward to a trial, but this is a suit that should never have been filed. In fact, it’s the second time he’s had a defamation suit tossed out. In 2003, Ward sued the Riverside Press Enterprise, which had written about environmental issues stemming from water running off his property with a high fecal content – presumably from his dogs.”
