End to dog docking in sight

Tighter rules surrounding the controversial practice of docking dog tails could be on the cards.

A new draft code of welfare for dogs has been released by the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee.

Committee chairman Peter O’Hara says the existing code states docking “shouldn’t” be performed but the new code says it “must not” be performed.

O’Hara says there is no good reason for docking a dog’s tail unless there is a medical problem.

He says breeders might find it hard to come around to the idea of dogs with tails, but a docked tail doesn’t benefit a dog in any way.

As mom to a Jack Russel Terror (Terrior), whose tail wasn’t docked, for which I’m extremely greatful, I definitely think the practice should be outlawed. Everywhere! My beautiful Lola has so much fun chasing her tail, and it can keep her busy for a long time! :-) If it had been docked, she wouldn’t have that experience and neither would I! I love watching her chase her tail! :-)

Yeah! Now if we can just get everyone on board. Woofs, Johann

I’m anti-cosmetic canine surgery here! I’m all for people getting cosmetic surgery, if that’s what they really want. But when people force their beliefs or traditions on their dogs in the form of cutting off body parts that show their emotion, I think someone needs to step in to stop these cruel practices. Yay for New Zealand! And may everyone else follow in their steps…
