Dogster Interview with Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan — Part I
Joy

CesarandDaddy.jpg

Dogster Daddy knows him as Pack Leader; the rest of us know him as Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan. Now we can all learn a little bit more about him. Cesar was nice enough to answer a few questions about his views on life and more.

Joy – What have you learned from your dogs?

Cesar – I have learned a lot about honesty, integrity, and loyalty from dogs. These things just come naturally to them. It’s not really a decision; it in their make-up. Dogs are concerned with survival, but first and foremost, the survival of the pack. Sometimes these qualities can be hard to find in human beings, but I try to surround myself with people who share these traits.

Joy – What changes would you like to see in society you feel would be most beneficial for dogs?

Cesar – For dogs and humanity, we live in a fearful society. This fear often stems from ignorance. I believe that, through spreading knowledge, we can make a better world – not just for dogs but for humans and all of Mother Nature.

We are the species with the power to destroy the world or heal the world. It’s in our hands, but right now, we are doing a good job of destroying it. I am happy that I am part of a group of people that are creating a movement to help heal the world.

I believe that you have to heal your own world first: your family, your kids, your dog, your significant other. If you don’t have a good relationship with your own wife, why do you tell me to communicate with my wife? Your own kids aren’t stable; why do you insist that my kids behave well? Your own dogs don’t listen to you; how are you going to teach me about a dog? Set an example. Start by becoming a pack leader in your own world and healing own your world, and the effects will ripple.

Right now we have a lot of negative role models, and that’s the ripple they create. We need more positive role models. It’s like how I help an unstable dog. I bring one unstable dog to a group of twenty stable dogs — all twenty stable energies against one unstable energy. The unstable dog doesn’t see breed, size, or disability. He just sees the energy that the other dogs project and he only has one choice: to become that stable energy. We need to create a world where the highest level of energy is from positive role models, so we can overpower negativity.

Check back tomorrow for Part II of the interview.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! It is needed. My pets are very grateful to Cesar. Very grateful!

    Dear Cesar Millan,
You are so very right! So many folks have forgotten and thank heavens there are wonderful leaders of our packs like you who help resist the way of the culture to tear down. I believe like you we must first HEAL within our families, the world is constantly pulling and tugging at them from every angle and if they are not grounded with true love and strong leadership at home they get wounded.

Each of my children loves dogs and has dogs because they give love unconditional and that is how we love each other. We really need to project this positive attitude forward we have found it has improved not only our lives but those of others around us. All for the love of our little dogs. They give to us then we can give to others.

Cesar – I am interested in you and everything you have to say from a four-legged perspective. I enjoy watching you with my mom and brothers – my brother Dudley (golden retreiever) is simply mesmerized by you.
I would love to see what you’d do with me – ha ha!
Oh – and Joy? You are the BEST interviewer with two legs ever! BOL!

  5. Molly

Thanks so much for bringing us this interview. We think Cesar is so valuable to the dog community and we are so happy that he shares his knowledge and wisdom with us all. I have learned many things from him just watching his show. I am also happy that he is such a positive spokesperson for his breed, that usually gets such negative publicity. We need more pet owners and people like him!

  6. Joy

    Thanks Oliver Louis!

  8. Judith MacNeil

Why would Dogster help promote Cesar Milan when the American Humane Association has called his techniques “inhumane, outdated and improper”? Please read the article at the AH web site at the following link. Just being popular and a celebrity dosen’t make him right.

    http://www.americanhumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=nr_news_releases_dog_whisperer

Training has changed dramatically in the last 15 or so years and I think we should all be promoting the positive techniques that are available to us all. Please have a look at any of the books by Pat Miller, Dr. Patricia McConnell, Karen Pryor, Jean Donaldson and Morgan Spector (just to name a few). Please do some research and then make up your mind about what you are doing to your dog and how you want to treat your companion.

  10. Steven Edwards

I am from Ireland and I think Cesar is excellent at dog rehabilitation and people training. I am a proud owner of a ”power breed”, in my Akita Alfie and i think Cesar should visit Europe and spread his depth and knowledge.

  11. Mary McMullan

To Judith MacNeil: I don’t think you are really paying attention to what Caesar Millan is doing. Nothing in his technique uses any form of violence towards dogs. If you think you can “clicker” train a powerful breed out of his aggression you don’t understand dog psychology. Pay attention and stop being so emotional!

  12. Gail Black, Colorado Springs, CO

Healing our own personal world is the best possible example each of can make. As we set this example, the rippling effect is astounding! My canine Pieper teaches me so much about being in the present. She is so smart! I’m amazed by her on a daily basis!

Thank you for your good work and I will continue to spread the word!

  13. MYRA

Judith Macneil: inhumane, outdated and improper? how would you contain or change some of cesar’s “projects?”. can you post this? how about the japanese “jinday?” (not sure how to spell that one) “if” someone strangled their dog, did they not know they were killing their dog? i think cesar is wholly a dog lover and wants to help them, and humans too. he makes me look at dog behavior in the eyes of the dog. dogs have definite ways of acting that i have never thot about, altho i have always had dogs (40 years and counting), and i sure have tried to get in their heads. thanks.

  14. Sue

Any chance you could do some seminars in the UK? Show really popular over here any my puppy could use some calm submissive energy!

  15. Judith

    To Mary McMullan,
Please re-read my post. I said the American Humane Society has used those terms and has asked National Geographic to stop supporting him. You are not quoting me. Did you read their statement? Are they not a reputable organization?

  16. linda stamp

I personally LOVE Cesar and I wish He would come to Canada and as far as any cruelty to animals I will never believe he would be cruel or inhumane to any living creature.

  17. Gerald Brown

Cesar Milan you are the greatest. We in New Zealand love your programs. We are getting repeats but they are well worth watching again, as you are a really great trainer.

  18. Justine Bradbury

I first want to start with a big thank you to Cesar Milan,i think you are great and i love the way you are with your kind hands in showing and guiding the dogs and wish i could come and work with you as i am a big dog lover and have had some experience in fostering dogs and rehomeing them once they have got better. Also i read about you being sued i think it is unfair and i support you 100% I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU WOULD LET IT HAPPEN also people must realise you cannot be at yor centre 24-7 just wanted to let you know i am 100% behind you, i think you are great and watch your programms all the time BIG THANKS TO YOU

  19. mikke

Cesar Milan, I like you so much because you understand and love dogs. You’re greatest.

  22. Dave

Just wanted to comment to anyone who thinks Milan is inhumane. The bottom line is he treats the dog like a dog. When we humans try to treat a dog with human psychology we are abusing the dog. Milan is simply using techniques that mimick what a mother dog or the dominant dog in a pack would do. None of what a dominant dog in pack does is harmful because the pack leader is doing it for the good of the pack and not the individual. So bites mimicked with the hand and putting a dog on the ground to obtain dominance is just straight up dog language. They understand this and is why it works. Milan does a great job and should be supported and recognized for his great work.

I have tried a few of cesar’s methods on the german she[herd i have just adopted from a rescue centr here in the uk.
he is 3yrs old and for those 3 yrs he was kept in a back yard, never walked on a lead and has never known human kindness love or affection, i have brought him into a house with a 6 yrs old german shepherd bitch and she is fine with him though he has tried to dominate her it did not work, he tried to dominate us also, thats when i put cesars technique into action, and it is working. if you go at any dog with an aggressive manner the dog will be fearful and that fear will turn to aggression, softly softly, my new dog is reacting to a softer but firm tone and is doing what he is told and is learning to walk on a lead after only 5 days. I have had german shepherds all my life Jae is my 9th and i believe i understand this breed but by watching cesar i have come to understand more about dogs in general,
AND TO THOSE OF YOU WHO CALL CESAR INHUMANE AND DATED!!!! you have a lot to learn about canine behaviour, and the behaviour of some humans, mutual respect and trust is a must to maintain a happy environment in which the two can live happily, but also the owner of a dog must be the alpha male, thats when the dog will become respectful of its owner. Dogs of ANY breed respect the pack leader!
This is what cesar has taught me.
    finally,
a word for cesar please come to the uk theres a lot of us would benefit by a visit from you, Your the best keep up the good work! Joolz, Tyler and Jae. uk.

  24. Kelli Lackman

I fully support Cesar. I feel we are Blessed to have someone with his wisdom. I have learned so much from him. Cesar Rocks.

  25. Diane

I’m from England and I watch you all the time, the things you say make sense, but I had a problem with my Jack Russell she is so small and would not come down the stairs, I watched your program relating to this problem and tried your advise, but it didn’t work. I tried everything (tit bits and such) but nothing worked, then one day out of the blue she just came down the stairs… end of problem. Maybe like they say patience is a virtue. Love your program, pick up loads of tips. Thanks.

  26. margaret linley

your great love your show just wish you could come to ohio more often . we all in ohio needs your help keep up the good work. thank again

  27. Sherrie

To Judith MacNeil: Do you even own a dog? There’s a reason he’s so popular….because his methods work. So really, before you go quoting others, do your own research and use your own experience before you slam someone Cesar’s success.

  28. nickdrc

Do you have any tips on how to train a wild bulldog?

  29. nickdrc

My dog is named Maxx and he does not stop running and breaking things and he hurts us sometimes
