Canine rescuer wins award
Dog’s efforts avert drownings

By Robert Medley
Staff Writer

With a toddler clinging to her neck, her knees and feet slipping on moss, Julie Whittaker fought to keep the girl’s head above water.

Yet the more Whittaker struggled to get out of Lake Overholser, the farther down the ramp she slid into the murky water.

It took a 28-pound Pembroke Welsh corgi, short on legs but long in heart, to save Whittaker and her 2-year-old great-niece, Kyleigh Grace Todd, from drowning that afternoon.

Another Day, Another Dog — A Review
Joy

another-day.jpg

Another Day, Another Dog by Trevor Rowe is a gentle memoir. Imagine you wander into a small English village, find the ancient, inviting pub and open the door to a cool, quiet inner sanctum of a room. You notice an interesting older man sitting in the corner with a few friends. As you listen (you aren’t really eavesdropping because the room is small enough and there aren’t too many people here now that you can easily hear the Englishman’s monologue) you catch yourself being drawn into his stories.

Vick Dogs Being Assessed, Vick Has to Pay All Costs for Long-term Care
Joy

vickdog2.jpg

Hmmmm, most pro football fans want Vick to get jail time. Does that mean the media and Vick defenders will quit saying that those of us who want justice for the dogs Vick abused and murdered are just a bunch of lefty PETA fanatics?

Thanks to USA Today for this update.

Care of pit bulls in Vick case being decided

By Gary Mihoces, USA TODAY

While the courts and animal experts decide the fates of about 50 pit bulls taken by investigators in the Michael Vick dogfighting case, Vick’s agreement to plead guilty says he must pay the “full amount” to evaluate — and possibly put down — the dogs.

“Such costs may include … all costs associated with the care of the dogs … including, if necessary, the long-term care and/or humane euthanasia of some or all of those animals as may be directed by the court,” the agreement says.

Remember the Dogs in Dogfighting
Joy

Thanks to Clare at Dog Topics for barking in this excellent piece from PBRC News and Views to my attention. The author is Kate Fraser of the Animal Farm Foundation. She reminds us all to remember the dogs so cruelly affected by dogfighting.

Guest Blogger - In Whose Yard the Dog Sits

Animal lover or not, it would take someone with a heart of stone to read the details of the crimes Michael Vick committed against the pit bull dogs in his “care” and not feel sick. While the media talk about how much “time he’ll do” and whether or not he’ll ever play in the NFL again, there is one vital piece of information missing from the equation…this isn’t about Michael Vick, it’s about the dogs.
