West Virginia Shelter Clearing Complete Shelter in 1-2 Months, Hundreds of Dogs and Puppies to Be Euthanized
Anyone with any more information on this situation, please bark in! Can the authorities in Point Pleasant, West Virginia really be this unfeeling?
Thanks to the unflappable Jade Snoop for barking in this news.
The Mason County Animal Shelter in Point Pleasant, WV has been given 30-60 days by the county to clear their entire facility so they can start from scratch.
There are close to 300 dogs and puppies at this shelter and volunteers & workers have been fighting to keep all of these animals alive. If you are a rescue who’s able to help, or if you’re someone who wants to adopt, please take a look at their website. It’s updated almost every day, to try and help as many of these animals as possible.

WTH is going on there? do they want to get rid of all the animals so that they can fix the place up or what?
We rescued two of our dogs indirectly from the Mason County Shelter (through a rescue group in Pennsylvania). I know that they suffered a fire not too long ago, I wonder if the facility needs to undergo major renovations because of it?
In any case, West Virginia has been experiencing a HUGE pet population problem. It is insane that a single shelter is housing 200+ animals to begin with.
I don’t know if someone is already doing this or not but maybe its time to put a spay/neuter team on the roads of WV to service all those small towns and hamlets.
I have emailed Best Friends Animal Santcuary about this issue and I hope that they can be of some assistance. I’m also emailing the other animal organizations that are big enough to possibly help. I looked at the Macon County shelter’s website and was in disbelief at the number of dogs they have there, and am in complete awe at what the the volunteers there must be willing to do to maintain this many. I agree, it seems like spay/neuter laws are either not in effect in that state or not enforced. However, the problem is imminent now and spay/neuter options will only help future pet overpopulation. I wish I could fly out there and bring one home to California, but we already have 5 pets!
Thanks for posting this info!! I was drawn to the web site list of available dogs-not sure why as I have no where to put another dog-and found what appears to be a pretty little Brittany boy listed as a hound. I have been in touch with ABR and they are going to check to see if he is a Britt and can get into the rescue with a foster. If he isn’t a Britt they will try to determine a breed and notify the correct rescue. Maybe that will get at least one a shot at a good life. Too bad we can’t help them all.
Thanks Carrie for helping the little Brittney boy!
I know all the breed specific rescues are over filled but if they can check for any of their own in that shelter we could help save a few more doggie lives.
