Chihuahua Ducky Declared World’s Smallest Dog

It’s Ducky: He set a world record
Tiny Charlton Chihuahua declared smallest dog alive
Lisa Messier held her short-coat Chihuahua Ducky, who weighs just 1.4 pounds. (DOMINIC CHAVEZ/GLOBE STAFF)
June 19, 2007He looks like a wingless bat, quacks like a duck, lounges in a car seat, and naps in a baby’s playpen. Occasionally, over his perky ears and bulbous eyes, he wears a suede bomber jacket and crystal necklaces.
At 1.4 pounds and 4.9 inches tall, the yappy short-coat Chihuahua now has something to flounce about: Ducky of Charlton was declared the world’s smallest living dog, by height, by Guinness World Records , according to documents his owner presented.“People say Chihuahuas are miserable and evil,” said Lisa Messier , who bought the nearly 3-year-old dog for $5,000 when he was 13 months and named Macho Man. “I think they’re really sweet, and if you want to go some place, you can just throw him in your pocketbook.”
Messier, who owns eight other Chihuahuas, said she spent about $600 for a fast-track review by Guinness World Records. “My husband is laughing at me, but I think it’s cool,” she said.

Hey guys,
Wasn’t dogster’s own Dancer going to enter this competition?
Does anyone know if Dancer’s size/weight has been recorded by GBWR yet?
Yes, I think Dancer was.
Hey guys…it’s me Dancer! Just to let you know…mommy just withdrew all of my paperwork from Guinness! You see it is not hard to tell a little fib about your measurements, all you gotta do is send a statement from your vet with another witness and a couple of phots. Mommy doesn’t feel it is worth all of the headaches and ugliness that has gone along with this to wage a challenge. My vet would have put my height at whatever mommy wanted him to, but it’s not worth it for a piece of paper. Mommy still says I am the Worlds Cutest Doggie! I have lived alot longer than anyone said I would so that is celebration enough for us! We are kinda glad this is over…to much hatefulness and ugliness out there about this stupid piece of paper!
I would love this story if the pup was a rescue or from an odd birthing, but it sounds as if the owner is so proud that her dog is so tiny, and most likely, unhealthy and thus, irreposnsibly bred. No dog should be less than four pounds or so, and just a bit over 1 pound scares me and makes me sad for the little one. Rodents, yes, dogs, no.
I mean, $5,000 for a 1 pound dog? Maybe if it had a dozen titles on it and had won a couple championships, then it would be “worth” $5,000.
Sigh….
Dancer,
You’re right. A silly piece of paper doesn’t change how much you’re mom loves you or how the rest of us care about you as one of our pack!
You’re a tiny bundle of love, Dancer, and I’m proud to call you a Dogster!
I love little Dancer. Paying that much money for a chance to have the smallest dog is obscene. You have a lot of class Dancer’s mom.
jenny
WOW what a sore loser you are!!!!!!!! i persoanlly know lisa and ducky and he is 100% the height said. thats SO sad you cant be happy for someone.. so sad.. as for the comments from lily, how mean, ducky is 100% healthy, lisa spent thousands on testing him to make sure he was 100% healthy, the reporter added the thousands into the price he said she paid… jeez… if you dont have something nice to say dont say it.. AND lisa does yorkie resuces and loves all animals regardless of size. She feels every dog is adorbale in their own way. She would never ever put down another dog. As for jenny saying you can tell a vet to put whatever height they want, thats not true. it seems to me as though jenny held the tape inches off the ground in all her photos, i saw photos of lisa measuring ducky and it is 100% accurate. ducky was not bred for size, his parents were big chihuahuas in the 5 to 6 lb range.. he has never had a unhelathy moment and he is a miracle baby. You guys should be proud that there is a dog so well loved and cared for… makes me so sad to read all these nasty jealous comments…. try to be nice , try to say nice things, life is too short to be mean.
also.. wanted to add one more thing..
jenny, lisa defended you on some message board where people were saying really mean things about you,,. lisa felt bad for you… she thinks dancer is beyond adorable and would never say otherwise. jenny you have a website up trying to sell dancer merchandise… to me it seems as though you are tying to proft of him, lisa would never try to proft of her dogs.. just makes me so mad that ALL of you cant say nice things… i am sure there is a dog out there smaller than ducky…. there is always one better out there… and when the time comes lisa will handle it with the grace and dignity she handles life with.. these cowardly comments you all have made show your true colors.. how dare jenny accuse lisa of having her vet lie about his height. dont be such a sore loser… jenny you were the one wanting to take poor brandys title away in lenght. i saw that video.. it was gross.. you were like a vulture hoovering over it’s prey… i did not like you when i saw that video.. i knew you were not a kind person… and now your true colors show for the world of dogster to see.. congratulations….
woof?
I don’t get it…it seems there may be some inconsistencies in the story…It says that Lisa bought the “nearly 3-year old dog for $5,000 when he was 13 months old”… ummmm…3 years old and 13 months old are a little bit off! I’m just sayin’!
Jodie – I think you should take your own advice about being nice, some of your own comments are quite nasty. I don’t see anything in Jenny & Dancer’s message here that points any fingers, they are talking in generalities from what I see. If there are other things going I don’t think this is the place to air them. Be happy for your friend and move on. Congratulations to the winner.
she bought him when he was 13mths, he is now close to 3.. she has had him close to 2 yrs…
nicole… pleaseeeeeee.. jenny is a sore loser, nothing mean in saying that…. why wouldnt she just say she was happy for the winner… ??? makes her look the fool….
that little chihuahua is ridiculously small. this is a great site, i had no idea that there was a rattle snake vaccine for dogs. i was hiking with my giant schnauzers this weekend and literally almost stepped on two relaly scary looking snakes (not rattle thankfully) and started to worry which kept the poor boys on the leash for the rest of the walk.
anyway… found this site through the Blogger’s Choice Award, it’s nominated for best animal site.
unlike some of the others it’s actually got pertinent articles. it has my definite vote and i think it deserves more. you can add a brag badge to make it easier for people to vote for you. http://bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/112
i would like to say congratulations to Ducky! you are so adorable.
If you think “Dancer” is the record holder why did you pull the papers? Why don’t you either follow through getting your dog into the Guiness Book, or just suck it up and take the loss. No need for the shenanigans. If you truely thought it was the record holder then you prob. wouldnt have stepped out of the race. If your worried about headaches take a pill.
I think Jenny and Dancer did the right thing. I do not see how she is being a “sore loser”…it seems she realized there was maybe way too much hype over naming the world’s smallest dog. Dancer is adorable and lovable, and a rescue to boot!
We need to remember that there are irresponsible breeders breeding tiny, tiny dogs, and claiming them as “teacups”, and for one breeder to breed Chis as small as one pound, there is something seriously wrong there.
We do not know the story behind Ducky, but if the owner paid $5,000 originally for the pup, even at over one year old, that seems outrageous, and exactly what we see on all of the backyard breeders and puppy mills websites, promoting their designer mutts and “teacup” puppies.
I do not see the good in promoting and rewarding such breeding with a GWR and such fame.
Jodi…I am truly glad that another dog has gotten the record. Ducky is a cutie pie. You have no idea how much ugliness and hatefullness has come from all of this. Dancer did measure in at 5 inches. But you know what, even if something happened to Ducky, but hopefully he will live a long and healthy life, I would never go through this again. Lisa will also see how hateful and hurtful people can be. I have never said anything hurtful or hateful about her or little Ducky I wish them luck, they are going to need all of the love and support they can get.
We still have the fan club for our littlest buddy Dancer. He don’t need no paper to make him a superstar in our eyes or any of his fans. With the publicity came recognition of all the good work his Mommy is doing for other animals and people in nursing homes. Dancer, you rock with us! Anyone want to join the club….everyone is welcome!
Love Jenna and Donna
Everyone who believes that Dancer’s owner was profiting off from him should think before they speak. They do wonderful things for charity and other animals…she wasn’t gong to make a dime off from Dancer…the money was going to shelters, etc. Jealousy doesn’t become anyone and we should all just let this go and let them get on with their lives. We are still your number one fans. Jenna Pooh and Mommy Too!
WOW! Jen and Dancer you are BOTH class acts and no doubt the clear winners in the hearts of people on these boards. Might I remind all of you that our pets are all special and Jen, you are right, a piece of paper doesn’t change that.
Besides, if nothing else, Dancer is WAY cuter with a much greater personality to boot.
OMD…now there is a dog in Kentucky named Boo that has also sent papers to Guinness…he is on 4 inches tall. Will this ever stop!
Oh well…me off to visit the nursing home now! Have a great day all!
first off this is sick! that people are resulting to being children. I hope, that the people posting their comments are children because if you are adults, I feel sorry for you.
To make a comment that “Dancer is way cuter with a much greater personality to boot” is way out of line. What happened to for love of dog!
Ducky is adorable. Dancer is adorable. who cares, in reality who is named the smallest dog in the world. Not to mention, that both pup moms wanted the notoriety and the fame. If neither wanted it…they would never had sent papers in or appearances on tv.
If I were Ducky, I would not feel welcomed on dogster….I don’t know if they are members…but I wouldn’t join if I were them now. It’s obvious that people in this community would not be accepting of them.
To the one ashamed to be a Dogster, maybe you are indeed the humom of Ducky??
This whole debacle reminds me of being in the show ring with the greedy ninnies.
Bah bah bah.
ok guys…be nice and stop growling at each other. This does not matter any longer. I am sure there will be a breeder out there trying to breed a dog smaller than Ducky…and that is just sick in my opinion. Ducky is a cutie patootie and Dancer is a cutie patootie and they are both loved and that is all that matters. I just wish AKC or someone could put a stop to the so-called reputable breeders who are breeding dogs just to make them small.
we’re New to dogster this month. Glad I’m not in you guys’ groups.
Gosh, I go offline for a while to replace some peripherals and a dog fight erupts…
Okay Dogsters, let’s all calm down. It sounds like nobody is a sore loser. We all supported Dancer because she’s a Dogster. But we will welcome Ducky too. After all, we’re here for the dogs, of all sizes and shapes.
There are sooo many things to get worked up over and this is just NOT one of those things. Dogs are dying unloved and unwanted every day around the world. Dogs are suffering on chains every day. Dogs are abused every day. THESE are the things we ought to be upset about.
It sounds like Dancer and Ducky are both loved, wanted and happy. That’s what’s important, isn’t it?
So here’s to Dancer, Ducky and all the rest of the wonderful dogs (and cats) in our lives!
High Paw to Joy!
“I am sure there will be a breeder out there trying to breed a dog smaller than Ducky…and that is just sick in my opinion….I just wish AKC or someone could put a stop to the so-called reputable breeders who are breeding dogs just to make them small.”
Jenny and Dancer, lots of applause to you! That is exactly my only concern with this story, celebrating the deliberate breeding of one pound dogs to make Chis even smaller than they are!
Big kudos to you for your decision, AND for your work in pet therapy!!!
First of all, this is so childish. Jenny wasn’t trying to say anything bad about Lisa or Ducky. So Ducky got the title, good for him. Dancer didn’t…………..SO WHAT!!!!!! It’s a piece of paper. Second of all, Ducky isn’t to my knowledge a rescue, Dancer is. Paying that kind of money for a pet is crazy if you ask me, and since you didn’t, I told ya anyway. Now before you go trying to make Jenny out to be someone trying to make money off of her pet, you need to really watch what you say. It’s none of your business anyway what she does. And I don’t think Jenny was trying to say that Lisa got someone to lie for her on the weight/height thing either. She just said that it would be easy to do. Jenny rescued Dancer’s mom before he was even born. She had no idea what waited for her when the pups were born. One was normal and then there was Dancer. So he’s tiny, and he’s so cute I could just hug him to pieces. That don’t make her a bad person. You have no idea what your talking about when you say she was trying to make money off him. You have no idea of what that money was going to be used for, do you? NO, YOU DON’T!!!!! That is something you need to leave alone.
What I don’t get is why are you resorting back to your grade school years with the word slinging and childishness? Haven’t you got better things to do? Aren’t you grown yet? SO you know Lisa, great, We know Jenny and we know that she would never have wanted all of this nastiness. If she’d have known this was going to happen, she would have never told anyone of what she was doing, and probably wouldn’t have done it anyway.
It’s people like you that make the rest of us loose faith in people who try to do what’s right. As far as I can tell, Jenny’s never done anything to you and she’s not a sore looser. She just withdrew the paper work for Dancer because she felt it was all such a big mess. That don’t make her a sore looser. You however are a sore looser because you insist on bashing her for whatever she’s trying to do and for things you know nothing about.
Before you go slinging words around, please take the time to know what your fixin to stir up.
Jenny, I’m sorry but you know I couldn’t let this go once I found out about it. We love you and Dancer and don’t give a rats behind if he’s the biggest or the smallest. It’s who you are that makes you part of our family. Don’t ever let these people ruin what your trying to do. Everybody in your group loves and supports you and Dancer 100 %. And that’s what being a dogster member really means………not bashing other’s.
I wish I had my own article on Yahoo.
http://www.yahoo.com/s/609126
Ducky is adorable. I love him.
i don’t think that ducky is cute at all. there are some rats in NYC that are larger than him. i guess that i’ve never been much of a chihuahua fan, either.
read this about duckie..
http://www.epetwork.com/famous_pets.php
My post was deleted so I’ll say it again. Don’t believe for a second that Jenny and Dancer are glad this is over. Those dollar signs just went out the window and for someone who doesn’t care Dancer’s picture has been all over the place. And Miss Jenna Pooh, what rescue does Jenny raise money for? What rescue does she have? Anyone can put up a website. To Rhonda, it sure sounded like Jenny was saying Ducky’s mom had his measurement faked. Why say what she said if that’s not what was implied. Give me a break.
duckie is so kool i will love to buy him or a chihuagua that small if you wana sell him let me know omegaomegahp@yahoo.com
Hi all!!
Brand new as I just found this site today, but OH the great information here!! We just love it!!
I suppose I have mixed feelings about the “Smallest Dog Competition” – being a new mom of a tiny little girl myself, but I think recognition… in ANY form… can be the root of both negative and positive response.
A baby is, what a baby is… and I think that God has a hand in each one.
My little girl is an ACA registered Yorkshire Terrier. I’ve considered the breed as “choice” in my preference of “toys” and had been keeping my eyes and ears open for a “quality” pup, when I was contacted by a friend who had seen an ad on a local “tradio” type program.
The pup’s description sounded precious (of course, they all do) and I immediately contacted the owner, who told me that someone had already planned to come out to pick the puppy up, but her “terms” were “first come, first serve”…. (which was a big red flag – but by then I was already quite excited to meet this baby girl).
We drove as quickly as we could, the four hour drive to see what I’d hoped would become my new love….
To my amazement, it couldn’t have been a more speedy “transaction”…. I had of course, expected a rather long “inquisition” by the owner to assure that we were suitable parents for her little one – and was ready with a list of questions of my own, for her.
But when we arrived, the owner was standing outside this beat up ol’ junker of a car – - a scraggly 11 week old puppy in hand – - telling her daughter to take the money and write out a receipt for the “nice lady”.
She handed me the puppy (who I could tell by the evident flea infestation, was already experiencing the effects of anemia) and the registration papers – and while I was quite shocked at the “lack of fancy” of the meeting, I couldn’t resist those big, beautiful, brown eyes looking up at me………………………….. I handed over the money and scooped my little Yorkie angel up and ran about as far and fast away from there as I could get…. sweet new baby in tow – overwhelmed with excitement – and suddenly overcome by the reality that I had neglected my list of (over 30!!) questions that I had so diligently prepared in the event I found a “puppy of interest” and realized that I may have just comitted myself to a very unhealthy little puppy.
Thankfully, though – - baby Natalie has been a true joy, in every sense of the word!! After vigorous medical testing, we’ve found her to have no health issues other than ridding her of the fleas and dealing with some hypoglycemia issues – along with the fact that she REFUSES to eat ANY type of dog food…. (angels simply DO NOT break kibble with common ANIMALS!!) ::gigglin’::
So, she is now fed every 3 hours (’round the clock until she is a bit older yet), a diet of various Gerber baby foods… meats, vegetables, organic rice / oat & grain cereals and the little Gerber toddler dehydrated fruits.
As well, Natalie is partial to the boiled chicken, organic rice, peas and carrots that I prepare for her once a week.
My precious baby girl is 23 weeks old today…. a delicate thing at just 24 ounces, she’s still no “World’s Smallest Dog” by her height of 5 1/2 inches and length of about 10 inches. (if I measured correctly)…. but personally, I don’t need a record book to tell me that this beautiful dolly is one of THE BIGGEST BLESSINGS in MY WORLD!!!
Nice to “meet” you all!! Looking forward to all the wonderful tips, tricks and stories found here!
Take care of each other and your furfaces!!!
Welcome Natalie’s Mom!
I’ll look forward to hearing more from you.
I think that is so cute i wish i have a small dog like that but I have a chocolate lab, alligator, 3 cats, 2 lizards 10 rats & mice and i did have a bob tailed cat named Sambo…
Love,
Sierra Foster
lol thats really small
Hi i think Ducky is the most ADORABLE thing i have ever saw!!!!!!!! Not to be nosy but how much did you pay for him??????And what kind of a Chihuahua is he?
omggggggggg 375-7683
Woah. That dog is small….maybe too small? I mean dogs aren’t really supposed to be under 1 pound. I know it’s a chiwawa and it’s a natural small dog, but i rlly dont think it shld be tht small.
feed it.
Hannah.
Some of you people just need to shut your jealous, uneducated mouths up. Hannah your a fucking idiot. Why don’t you feed yourself some knowledge. The dog came out small woop de do! Get over it. Doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with him. I swear some people have nerve.
hi 1st i think gina should pull the stick out
of ur ass cuz it is a pretty small dog but still that can mean
plenty of things so hannah dnt trip and listen to others
tiny miget but cute how big is he now?????? TINY!!!!!! LOL
aaah that so cute i luv chihuahuas they are so cute i want one there worth the money
my friend just got a 8 week old chihuahua and it weighs 1.8 puonds! She is so cute! I mean ya, puppy chihuhuas are suppossed to wiegh like a pound , but a 3 year old? That’s just cruel! BTW, my friend got her puppy chihuahua for olny 251$ and she’s alot cuter than the one in this picture!
i was free and im 1and 1/2 inches tall
my breed is ratmonkey
Wow – what a twit. Paying $5000 for an irresponsibly bred runt?
Thankfully there are still a few responsible chihuahua breeders out there who don’t breed “teacup” dogs i.e. deprive their puppies of nutrition, breed unhealthy runts together, etc. When my 4.5lb chihuahua is a little older, he would definitely like to have another NORMAL SIZED and HEALTHY chi sibling.
People who breed dogs that small should be fixed along with their unhealthy breeding pairs.
that is so cool. i think that seeing the smallest dog in the world is so awesome. i can not think of what it would be like to hold see and touch the worlds smallest dog that is so wonderful. people that breed dogs that small and get good luk should be proud of them selves that they got a dog that was the worlds smallest dog and got to breed it. i love dogs and think that is so cool.
So cute!
I remember my maltese being this small when it was born.
i love dogs they are so cool.your dog is so cute i love it, i wish i could see it in real life.
oooo its so cute!!!! i love it its i eyes pop out tht makes it cute
dude that’s the smallest dog i’ve ever seen.
Wow so small and cute..I feel so sorry for Ducky, it must be scary to be so tiny in such a big world.
I love chihuahuas but would be scared to have one so small.I love my big ol’ 7lb chibaby, she is as hardy as they come.
I didnt bother to read past the first nasty comment (people suck). Im glad the little pup has a proud (& obviously loving) person to call his own. TOO CUTE <3
So me and my father we bread Chihuahua for the last 35 years we oun very tiny shmoot coat and very healty the oldest one is15 year old We are from MALTA
thats a cute puppy.Pretty tiny but so cute.So if you get this please,THANK YOU SO MUCH
that dog is so tiny no effense butt its pretty ugly
this dog is like really cute and really skinny wow they should feed it more cuz it doesnt look so healthy
Cute!
I agree, how could ANYBODY breed such a small puppy?
I wouldn’t be proud that my dog was 1 pound, I would be scared to death that he was that small!
I rescued an extremely small Chihuahua 2 years
ago. She weighed 1 pound 7 ounces at one year of age and was the smallest dog that I had ever seen. She is named “Keeta”. Her orginal owner had 3 children & worked a full time job. She did not
have time for the Chihuahua. Ketta is hydrocephlic,
meaning the she has water on the brain. She
cannot eat quite right, but evidently the orginal
owner just put down dog food for her to eat.
Therefore when I got Keeta, she was merely
skin & bones. I have worked extremely hard
to put weight on her. I put dry dog food in the
kitchen blender, & then add some water & mix.
It is literally mush. It then goes into the microwave
to warm. Then Ketta sits in my lap to lap up
the mush … much like a kitten would lap milk.
I am very proud to say that Keeta now weights
about 3 pounds. She is doing great & can
definitely hold her own with my 4 hairless
Chinese Crested dogs. I guess that I just love
animals & am not concerned with any records.
I couldn’t wait until Keeta gained some weight
& looked healthy. Also, I do not believe in the
contest for “World’s Ugliest Dog”. We are all
God’s creatures, & we are all beautiful in our
own way.
I HAVE A 18 WEEK OLD IT weighs 0.9 pounds IT LOVEY
That Is Not A Nice Looking Dog At All It Looks Wrong ^o)……….I Have Tooo Lovely Collie Dogs Who Heard Sheep And Are Great At Agulity
aw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!its so cute
It is the most cute dog i have ever seem
It is the most cute dog i have ever seen i love him so much
this dog looks like a rodent! it’s nasty looking! Are you people seeing the same picture? Responsible breeding? whatever, so many people are wanting “teacup” puppies and are willing to spend thousands for them. Anyone with half a brain can tell this dog looks unhealthy. Statistic show that they don’t live as long. Enjoy the tittle because someone else will continue to breed their sweet “teacup” until it’s the size of a mouse! Now that’s something to be proud of…where’s my puppy farm?
Well “Pebbles” is probably about to be declared smaller than this dog. She was born in Sundre, Alberta Canada…. and YES, she is very healthy and vibrant. At 4 months, she has finally hit the 1 pound mark. If she reaches 1.5 pounds I would be surprised. She is a good little eater, and loves to play with my small Bichon Shitzu (6.5 lbs). Her head definitely looks more like the Chihuahua, but she is black & tan like the min pin. Her brother and sister were double her size…. but she is definitely the “fighter” of the lot!
I don’t know how anyone can say that a tiny little puppy like Ducky is “Ugly”. High maintenance, maybe, but “Ugly”….. any true animal lover will tell you otherwise.
Okay. Look. Yes, it’s unusual that a pup from 5-6 pound Chi’s is this small. But there are Chi’s that get this small without people breeding them wrong. There are chi’s out there who are Only three pounds. The runt of a three pound dog will be about just under two pounds. It’s common. My aunt is a vet. My neighbor has one of these tiny chi’s. And I’m completely unbiased. I just found this website, I’m a complete animal lover. I’m sure Dancer is cute too. And Ducky is. So it’s very well possible that Ducky is a runt of the litter. What is odd that Ducky’s parents are bigger chi’s. But who cares who has the smallest dog? All that matters is people CARE for these dogs. Something a lot of strays don’t feel. So go to a pound, shell out the thirty bucks to get a dog that really needs your love. Because doggies in the pound don’t have anyone else.
Best to everyone <3
omg!!!!! he is so cute i want a puppy as big as my hand omg!!! i would look so cute with her!!!! omg!!!!!!
