4-inch Lake County Chihuahua may be world’s smallest dog
LEESBURG — It’s semiofficial: Dancer, the itsy-bitsy Chihuahua and Lake County’s most famous pooch, likely is the world’s smallest dog.
The handbag-size squeaker has grown a bit, but he’s still plenty petite.Dancer’s rust-colored frame measured 5 inches high Friday, his first birthday. That is shorter than the last world’s smallest dog, which, according to Guinness World Records, stood at 5.4 inches.
Soon, Guinness officials could recognize him as the world’s smallest living dog by height, a title he couldn’t claim until he was a year old.
During April, when the Orlando Sentinel first told the story of the diminutive dog, Dancer stood 4.1 to 4.5 inches from paw through shoulder and weighed about 18 ounces. He has since grown taller and heavier, gaining about half an inch and three ounces.
On Friday, Jenny Gomes of Okahumpka, who has raised the dog since birth, kept Dancer standing straight for the official measurement by holding his toothpick-like legs.
“As close to the skin as you can get it, Doc,” she told veterinarian Dr. Jay H. Allen, who pressed a metal measuring rod against the shivering dog. Allen said the dog’s low blood sugar makes him shake.
“He’s probably a genetic accident,” Allen said. “He would not have survived if he didn’t have the training and knowledge that Jenny has.”
Gomes, 40, remembers caring for animals since she was 10.
She said that at birth, Dancer was the size of her thumb. She resisted advice to euthanize him, leaving Dancer to bloom under a media spotlight usually reserved for Hollywood stars.
In less than two months, the tiny Dancer has appeared in People magazine and on ABC’s Good Morning America. Videos of the dog are some of the most popular ever on OrlandoSentinel.com.
