Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. Recalls Products in Response to American Nutrition Inc. Pet Food Recall
Natural Balance Consumer Contact:
1-800-829-4493FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Pacoima, CA — April 27, 2007 — Because of the pet food recall initiated today by American Nutrition Inc., Natural Balance Pet Foods has announced it is issuing a nationwide recall of a number of canned products manufactured by American Nutrition. This action is limited to four specific Natural Balance canned formulas: Chicken Canned Dog Formula 13 oz , Beef Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, Lamb Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, and the 3oz and 6 oz Ocean Fish Canned Cat Formulas.
Natural Balance Pet Foods is taking this voluntary action after learning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed rice protein concentrate used by American Nutrition contained melamine, a substance not approved for use in food. These products are being recalled in addition to our previously recalled Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.Natural Balance Pet Foods has not received any indication of quality or safety issues, including pet illness, with the four withdrawn formulas. However, because American Nutrition informed the company that these four specific products may include rice protein concentrate, Natural Balance Pet Foods felt this action was necessary for the protection of its customers and their pets.
It should be noted that the products being recalled were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate. While the FDA is investigating this, current information indicates this error is a result of a manufacturing deviation by American Nutrition. Natural Balance is working with the FDA in this matter.

Well, the Venison and Brown Rice wasn’t labeled for rice protein, and even more egregious, the “grain free” Venison and Green Pea dry cat food wasn’t labeled for any kind of rice anything!
Perhaps NB’s practices of allowing undisclosed ingredients in the formulating of these foods made the manufacturer think it wouldn’t be a big deal to add undisclosed ingredients to the other food.
I don’t trust what NB says anymore.
Wow, I’m so glad I checked Dogster tonight, or I wouldn’t know about the NB recall. I feed my papillon Penny the Lamb Canned Dog Formula. I think I still have a can in the cupboard. Luckily she mostly eats dry food so she doesn’t get it everyday! I’m seriously going to consider making her food for her. She is, after all, one of the family
wtf?! i make my own dog food, so i don’t have to worry about this crazy food recall stuff! i feel really bad for all the people that have to worry about what food will be recalled next!
When will this end?
I find it totally unacceptable that so many of these newly added foods DON’T LIST all the ingredients. If the manufacturers try to weasel out of their responsibility for killing and sickening us pets by saying THEY didn’t contaminate the protein, THEY CERTAINLY DID CONTAMINATE THE FOOD by adding them and not disclosing it!
Smoke, *bar-rar-rarking* Mad
I am most upset that they changed the Cat’s Venison and Pea formula without mentioning it. The first ingredient used to be venison. It makes sense that a cat’s first ingredient should be a meat source. Now the first ingredient is pea!
Is it possible to get lists of foods that ARE safe?
And check out sfgate.com, my whole pet… might change your mind about the FDA.
PetsitUSA.com is trying to maintain a list of food NOT, repeat, NOT on the recall list. It is a good starting point, but should be viewd with caution - no offense meant to PetsitUSA. We updated out blog on Saturday with the information about the Sierra Pet Products recall. As of a few minutes ago when I checked the PetsitUSA list, neither Sierra Pet Products, nor Harmony Farms, was listed either good or bad.
The link to the PetsitUSA list is:

I am very upset with Natural Balance. I left many emails, and several phone calls , all received with no response. I will never trust this company again. Total Greed and corner cutting while charging high prices and cutting quality. My little Westie has been ill the last several weeks since he had been eating the NB Venison, Duck, and Veg. forms, in dry and in canned. The health of our pets is important to us. What is NBs response other than total silence????
