If you use ANY brand of wet or foil package dog or cat food PLEASE check this list! When I looked at it I was shocked to see the brands and number of brands affected!

Thanks to Autumn for posting this list in the Pet Poetry Group!

This is one time that I am glad I always buy Fancy Feast for my cat Manhattan.

  2. Ziggy

The one time time in his life that I fed Ziggy wet food from a pouch was this past Christmas, right after his neutering surgery. It was a brand on the list. The vet bills for his intestinal infection exceeded $500.00 and the carpet cleaning added another $150.00. He had diarrhea for a month so there was real suffering involved. I sure wish that this food company would step up and offer to reimburse those of us who were impacted by this.

NUTRO canned food is on the recall list! I was shocked–all the news stories state the recalled food was “store brands” (which I don’t buy) and mentioned foil packages.

The list contains ALL Nutro canned food types:
    Nutro
    Nutro Max
    Nutro Natural Choice
Nutro Ultra (included in Nutro list)

I almost didn’t read the story because I don’t buy “store brands”

  4. Jacquie Price

I’d like to pull all my Nutro and Natural dog & cat foods, please let me know the manufactured dated and can numbers involved for all of their products, dry, pouched, treats, etc. This is also for all other manufactured pet foods for cats & dogs.

    Thank you so very much!

Hey pet parents, we did a little analysis and number crunching of this recall here:
    http://www.itchmo.com/read/impact-of-menu-foods-pet-food-recall_20070318

We’re concerned and curious as to how this turns out. We get the feeling that the company has not been as responsive and forthcoming about themselves as we would have liked.

Our cat had to be euthanized a week ago. She had been eating Iams wet food in 3 oz cans for several months. The
codes on the last batch we bought were those published by Proctor and Gamble. She was only 8 years and should have had several more good years–particularly as a sheltered indoor cat. Her kidneys were 75% destroyed by the time she started exhibiting symptoms. We are heartsick and $500 poorer due to vet bills.

  10. Sherry

One cat with early stages of kidney failure…watching cat #2 like a hawk!

We saw the recall yesterday, checked our packets and determined both our cats have been eating the recalled food. A mixture of recalled and ok over the past week…not sure it it’s been prior to that time or not.

Our 4 year old had 6 ounces yesterday morning and our 15 year old about 2 tablespoons as a snack. We checked the internet for symptoms and started to watch them.

When our 4 year old vomited yesterday evening, we immediately took him to the emergency clinic. Test show he is in the early stages of kidney failure. All other tests and his behavior is completely normal.

The vet is extremely furious because they can’t get information from the manufacturer so they know how to treat it…they are not answering their phones. A dog was also admitted when we were there…much worse…not eating, etc.

So far, our 15 year old appears fine but we are taking her to our vet first thing Monday for tests to be sure.

PET OWNERS…if you have been giving your animals the recalled food, watch them like a hawk! If you wait for major changes in their behavior, not eating, etc. it may be too late. We do not know what the outcome will be for our cats but pray we caught it early.

I’ll post again as we know more.

I have set up this Blog Spot in an attempt to centralize where people can record the illnesses or deaths of their pets as a result of eating tainted food. There is also a link to the recall information and a link to the FDA website with their phone number.

I lost my 1 year old baby on March 9th and can’t believe this is not affecting more people than we know about. Please tell your story again and pass this on to everyone you know.

    Thank you,

    Karen Goodhart

  12. Joy

Thank you to all the fur parents who have affected furbabies for barking or meowing in! Please continue to let us all know what’s going on!

And Karen thank you for setting up this new site! It seems the information keeps changing so much so quickly and pet guardians are not hearing enough information to protect their dogs and cats! Please bark back in and give us all the link to your new blog.

I tried to find the recall list but was having a hard time till I got here and there they were. (Thanks Autumn) I was shocked to find Nutro on the list as both my cats & dogs eat the canned food. I ran & checked every single can & pouch and while they were on the list, the expiration date was different. I am not feeling to safe in feeding this to them anymore. That is it, from now on I am mixing shredded cheese & brown rice in with my dogs food. No more canned for them. My heart goes out to those pet owners who lost their pet and those dealing with a sick pet because of this recall. :(

  14. shannon

i’m glad to find this site my 2 yr old lab mix has also gotten sick from the recalled food.his kidneys so far are ok but when the vet ran the tests his liver has been effected and could still in time go into the kidneys.so now i have to wait and see if my poor guy could get sicker.the vet belives it is from the food.but with out the can and lot number i really can’t prove it.they took my name and number so i have to wait for them to call me back to see if they are going to take responsibility or not.and so the vet bills are still going.i think it is going to be a battle with menu foods.they are going to try and get out of what ever they can.

I was wondering if the pet food was tainted as far back as November and they just weren’t saying anything. I had a cat that died back in November of the symptoms that they said to look for. The food that I was feeding him(special kitty) is on the recall list. I didn’t even have time to get him to the vet, the symptoms were excessive thirst, excessive urination, loss of appetite, and his gums had turned pale. As soon as I noticed I called and made an appointment at the vet but unfortunately he died before the appointment.

  17. Marylin

It appears that this rat-poison tainted food killed my parents 9 year old Sheltie who had been eating Nutro Ultra canned. I am not using ANY food of ANY kind from ANY brand on the list. If there is rat poison in this food and they can’t figure out how it got there then IMHO they also can’t say if it got into the dry.

I urge everyone to completely boycott all brands on this list and as someone who has payed 2 or 3 times the cost in food for a “premium” brand I am furious at their false advertising. They use the same stuff as the CRAP brands.

Talk with your pocket book. It’s the only way big companies listen.

  18. Marylin

One more thing. I would be very careful about using any of the gravy-type “toppings” for food. They will probably be next on the recall list.

  19. Dina

this is just another disaster in a long line of them in the pet food industry. the way i see it, before all this processed pet food dogs and cats lived on table food, i am going back to that, and anyone who trust the pet food industry is nuts, i worked at a well known so called natural pet food company, and surprise they are on the list. get smart if you care about your 4 legged family members read Ann N. Martin’s books, Foods pets die for. think about it, would you stick your face in the bowl and eat that stuff, well then it isnt food. after all it is made with roadkill ,downer animals, euthanised pets, they even grind up carcasses loaded with large tumors, melt it all together at rendering plants, and viola fidos food.

Buddy, my 12-year old wire-haired daschund died on Monday, March 12, 2007 after eating three foil pouches of cuts and gravy over the previous week-end. He first became ill in January 2007 after feeding him two pouches of Mighty Dog food over a two-week period with some antibiotics prescribed for a topical bacteria infection on his outer ears. The Mighty Dog food was given to me in August 2006 by a friend who’s 16-year old dog died, we thought at that time from natural causes.

In February, 2007 Buddy ate a can of Country Stew over a three-week period with his new meds (diuretic and ACE inhibitor) after being diagnosed three weeks to the day after giving him Mighty Dog food, with congestive heart disease.

When Buddy died on March 12, I thought he had died at home from heart failure. In restrospect, I realize the food was what killed him over time. I am truly heartbroken.

I am writing this to let pet owners be aware that the contaminated food may date back to as early as August 2006, NOT December as reported by Menu Foods. Buddy had been given a clean bill of health in October 2006 when he had his annual shots and physical.

I hope this helps someone out there. Condolences to all who are affected.

    Thanks for your time.

Paula and all other pet parents who have lost a furred loved one,

My pack and I mourn your loss. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Your words could literally save another dog or cat’s life. I know its sometimes writing or talking about these things so we all appreciate your strength.

Please consider joining one of Dogster’s wonderful groups for dogs who have moved to the Rainbow Bridge. All of them are wonderful with gentle, caring people who understand your loss because they have been there. Celebrate your dog or cat’s life; do not beat yourself up or continue to mourn their passing to the point where it does you more harm than good. Your furbaby wouldn’t want that.

Now that said, please do not forget what has caused their deaths — greed, fear and someone passing the responsibility buck. Someone made the decision to save money by using dangerous Chinese wheat and other people let it pass because it was easier to not pay attention than to take on their rightful duty to act.

All of these people are afraid. Maybe they’re afraid of not getting their bonuses or even losing their jobs. Maybe they’re araid of being pushed aside at their jobs or board rooms. They must be made to acknowledge and NEVER forget that their decisions or lack thereof cost someone a loved one. For all we know, the same vices could be costing unknown and untold thousands of humans their lives as well.

So let’s remember our furry loved ones in beauty and let them inspire us to make necessary changes to keep this from happening again!

On Feb. 19, 2007 we lost our dear sweet papillon, Allie, that was only 5 years old just before this dog food recall occurred. Like many of you, I thought she had a simple upset stomach. She was on the dry Iams mini chunks. Although this is not incuded in the recall, how she died is so similar to the others.

She was always a healthy dog, my best friend is a vet .She saw Allie frequently.

That morning I was cleaning, my son and husband left to get their haircut. Earlier that morning I noticed how much water she was drinking. She ate her Iams food, which was a new bag, she maybe had 2 or 3 days worth. I noticed she threw up a good amount. I let her in outside as I cleaned it up. Minutes later I went out to get her and I couldn’t find her. She was down in a bush having a seizure. I grabbed her up. Her tongue was hanging out and her eyes fixed. I yelled for my 8 year old daughter and ran to the neighbors, realizing I needed help. Within minutes, she stopped shaking and I knew she was gone. I tried to give her mouth to mouth but I knew it was too late. My daughter was crying begging for me to help her. I have never been so hysterical. It has been 4 weeks and I still cry thinking about this. My son and husband came home after my neighbor called them, they too were just devastated.

Allie was such a part of our family. Not a night went by that she didn’t sleep with us. The first thing people asked was, “did she get in poison?? I knew our house and knew she had not been in anything. Her only symptoms were a few days before she vomitted and had diahrea and the excess thirst and lythargy. I too thought it was an upset stomach. My friend that was the vet asked if we had rat poisoning. We did not do an autopsy, she is buried in our back yard. The first thing my husband did after she died was threw out her food. We won’t have any proof that this caused her death.

I just don’t want anyone to go thru the heartache my family did. My daughter is still afraid something will happen. For weeks, she would not be by herself in the house. I am afraid this dog food recall affects many more types of food than they are releasing. My heart goes out to all the pet owners that have gone thru this. It is hard enough losing a pet of natural causes.

We still go out and light a candle for Allie each night. She died way too soon.

Thank you, Joy. I am looking forward to moving out of this dreadful funk and celebrating the undconditional love my Buddy gave to me and to everyone who knew him. I know that he would want that.

I am not quite there yet, though. It’s only been two weeks since he died and a week since I learned of the reason.

Somehow I will make sure that Buddy’s death was not in vein. I have already submitted my info to a lawfirm in Wisconsin that may be filing a class action suit. I am doing it to make a statement for change – could care less about any monetary outcome.

We need to protect the most dependent members of our society. Unlike children who eventually grow up, our pets depend on us for everything from birth until death. I am sorry that society has failed many of them right now.

  24. Dina

I have stopped feeding my pets all commercial dog food, i home prepare their food now. The stuff that goes into pet food is horrid, and all of them use it just that most pet food manufacturers have a dont ask dont tell policy. I live in Missouri
and I want to share a story a reporter did here on rendering and the pet food industry. We are making our pets and our feed animals into cannibals, think soylent green.
