Dog is buried alive, but survives
Story By: Kim McCrea

(PENSACOLA, Fla.) January 15 – A 5-year-old bull mastiff mix dog is resting as comfortably as possible inside the Escambia County Animal Shelter in Pensacola after being buried alive. Shelter Director Bruce Rova says the canine suffered some painful injuries: “His joints are swollen. His skin is irritated. He was traumatized. But tonight, he’s doing so much better.”

Over the weekend, someone buried the dog alive in the back yard of a home on West Jackson Street in Pensacola. Melissa Vanderpool’s boyfriend, Robby Wilson, is being credited as being the person responsible for saving the dog’s life. “He had to climb up and look over the fence,” Vanderpool says. “And he could see the dirt mound and hole. And periodically, you could see the nose of the dog come up to the top of the hole.”

Wilson saw something else which was even more heart-wrenching, another dog trying to rescue the buried dog. Shelter Director Rova explained the scene: “There was another dog in the yard that was coming over and smelling at that dog. The dog tried to push aside a stepping stone that was on the top of the area where the dog was buried.”

Wilson helped an animal control officer to dig the dog out. The animal was severely dehydrated, but still alive, and was rushed to an emergency animal clinic.

There’s no word yet on who might be the owner of the dog, or who might have mistreated him in such a way, but Rova says they have a very strong lead in the case.

How can we find out daily on this sweet boy?? I found out the animal shelter but no email and I am SURE they are being bombbarded with calls.
I would hate to see this dog put down or in the same area that he was.

This story has stuck with me since seeing the video for the for time yesterday. The owners deserve a rightful prosectution and criminal sentance. Let’s hope this poor dog becomes a flagship of awareness for all neighbors that reside close to animal abusers. We never know when something like this is going to happen, but need to be consious of the fact that it can. If you have any updates on this story please let us know!

There was another article saying that about 12 different parties have offered to adopt the dog; that on Tuesday after the incident he was able to stand; and that they are not taking any more adoption offers but will choose from among the ones they already have. One of the digger-outers and his wife are among the offers. The dog can’t be adopted til the court case finishes (prosecuting whoever did this). I have also been looking for updates every day but that one, shortly after he was found, is the only one I’ve seen so far.

Just when I think I’ve seen the most horrific case of animal abuse something even worse comes along. Thank God Robby Wilson was in the right place at the right time, and hopefully this dog’s story will have a happy ending. The scumbag responsible for this heinous act ought to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and let the punishment fit the crime. Bury the bastard!
