Pet dog’s amazing journey

A RUNAWAY dog has been reunited with its owners after a three month journey which took it 180 miles away from home.

Dexter, a six-year-old Jack Russell, escaped from his owner’s house in Port Talbot, near Swansea, south Wales, last August when the front door was left open for a few minutes.

After checking local vets and dog pounds for Dexter, his owner Jeff O’Callaghan said he bought a few puppies as he missed having a dog around the house.

Three months after Dexter’s disappearance, Mr O’Callaghan said he was stunned when he got a call from Battersea Dogs Home to say that his micro-chipped dog had been found in Southwark, London.

Mr O’Callaghan said: “At first we thought it was a wind-up but we called and it was true. “We just couldn’t believe it – it was almost too incredible for words.”

How Dexter – who had been microchipped – ended up that far away from home remains a mystery but he picked up a few scars and lost some weight along the way.
