Orange County (California) Humane Shelter Staying Open
A p-mail came in a few days ago saying that the Orance County Humane Shelter was closing and all the dogs would be put to sleep on the 8th of this month. Being basically pretty nosy I thought I would check it out. When I called the shelter I was told by an employee that the shelter is NOT closing. They are beginning construction but the shelter is staying open and there will be no mass euthenasia of dogs. She seemed to have heard this rumor before.
I hope this helps a few Dogster sleep a little better tonight knowing this is one less emergency to address.
Here’s the information to contact the shelter if you want to contact them directly:
Orange County Humane Society
21632 Newland, Huntington Beach, CA
714-536-8480 – open 7 days 9:00 am – 5:00 pmThey are located one half block from the Pacific Ocean just behind the power plant.
Update January 5th –
I’m still hearing rumors that the Shelter is to be closed and the animals put down. If you have some hard evidence that this is the case please bark in. I don’t doubt anyone’s word but I’m getting emails like this one from Catster Connie:
Hi Catster!
As a fellow pet lover against euthanization, I decided to look into this huntington beach humane society rumor. What information do you have that proves it is true?I both called the facility and found this OC Register news article.
Are people just ‘assuming’ its one big lie? I find it hard to believe that the current staff at the humane society (who MUST be animals lovers) would go along with a rumor like that.Thoughts?
Connie
Connie and everyone else, other than the one phone call I made to the shelter, I have no idea from personal experience whether or not the story is true. I am not trying to say anything about the verity of this suggestion. So if you have information you want shared and I can verify it, please bark to me directly.
If the story is wrong, perhaps the shelter could have the other rescues who are taking dogs due to the construction bark in.

Yes, I called them too, and that’s what they said, that they were remodeling. HOWEVER, the rescue group I work with got this information from insiders and other volunteers. They DO plan to kill some of the dogs and cats.
An email that I was sent by people who work on city councils, etc., in the area:
OC Humane is not a no kill facility as was put in print yesterday in the OC Register. By chance, I met a person who works there last Thursday. I was told that he is going to kill all the animals by the 8th because it’s not really a reconstruction. This person is a sincere, genuine individual who wants to do everything to help the animals get out of there before the deadline.
I was then put in touch with another person who confirmed what I was told and these two individuals do not know each other so I don’t believe anyone collaborated any story.
An email was put out and circulated other than what I wrote stating the same thing. Then on New Year’s Day I got a call from one of the two people who told me about the 8th… to retract the story. This person sounded nervous and something about urgency to retract was just off.
Yesterday another email went out – in that email it was stated that he wants to shut down, rebuild and turn that place into a boarding facility.
You were on the City Council then so I am sure you know that the request for that report didn’t just come with no good reasons. There is great distrust in Botros and his ability to do the right thing for the animals in the facility. With all the attention generated – I hope the animals will be safe.
An email from a trainer I know:
I had a student come to the store tonight to tell me she had to return a dog to the HB Shelter she adopted because the dog was to hard to handle. She was an 11 mo. American Bulldog mix and very sweet, but she chewed everything up when the owners left her alone. The lady said the people at the shelter said you know this dog is going to be put to sleep if you return her don’t you? They really pressured her to take the dog back because the dog was going to be put to sleep. I told the lady that was what I had heard about the dogs at the shelter and she was very upset but said she just couldn’t keep the dog. This dog was very friendly with the other dogs in my class and had a real sweet personality. I tried to get her to foster her but she said she would get too attached to her and it was very hard for her to take her back to the shelter.
And then a response from a lady who works in another rescue group:
I think the story is changing to suit the public. The vet will probably quietly PTS the dogs and cats there because he is interested in renovating his facility. The vet office is first and will take a year. He has had numerous allegations about how the dogs are handled, where they eat and sleep (with all the local rodents) and it is really a sad situation. I want to know if he is really associated with the real Humane Society, and if he receives government money. It all comes back to money. Who is asking these questions? He thinks it will go away. And the great dogs and cats there will suffer. Too many stories are coming from here…he knows we are on to him, so the people who answer the phone are given a script about the situation. A volunteer there was the original person who broke the news to rescues.
