Peter Beagle Interview — Day Two
Joy

Peter Beagle

Welcome to Day Two of the Peter Beagle Interview! Peter Beagle, as you probably know, is one of the leading literary lights of our generation. If you haven’t read one of his marvelous works, like The Last Unicorn, then treat yourself and get a copy soon!

If you haven’t read Day One of the interview which ran yesterday here on the blog then you might want to take a moment and catch up there first before reading on. We left the interview yesterday when Peter had mentioned that humans tend to ascribe behaviors we don’t like to non-human species. Today he talks more about that and the differences between how dogs and cats relate to humans.

China Targets Stray Dogs in New Campaign Against Rabies
Joy

This looks like a big step up from last year’s massacre of dogs in one Chinese province. But the article raises some equally big questions. 1) What is to be done with all the strays AFTER they have been innoculated? 2) Is this some tactic to go after dogs that have homes?

If there are any Chinese Dogsters or others who would like to answer these questions and give us all more info, PLEASE bark in!

This article was in the Teluga Portal.

Beijing, Oct 27 (Xinhua) Chinese authorities have embarked on a two-month extensive drive to remove stray dogs from Beijing’s streets as precautions are stepped up against the threat of rabies.

Puppy Mill Industry Voting Against Missouri Senatorial Candidate — Fear She Will Close Down Missouri Puppy Mills
Joy

Claire McCaskill

As regular readers know, I don’t talk about politics EXCEPT when it concerns our furfriends. Here’s a chance to make a difference with your votes. According to a report by Lucy in President Isabel’s Animal Abuse Commission, Puppy millers are urging their supporters to vote against Missouri Senatorial candidate Claire McCaskill (D) because they expect her to close down puppy mills in Missouri.

For those of you who don’t know, Missouri is one of the worst states for puppy mills. Dogsters and other dog lovers here in Missouri (I live in St. Louis) have been fighting a very uphill battle for a long time.

And before any of incumbant Jim Talent’s(R) supporters write in demanding equal time, let me extend an invitation to his office to send us a statement on his stand on puppy mills. I’d love to see him pledge to do something different in his next term and close down the puppy mills!

Dog Lovers Unite

The commercial kennel industry is worried. They say that if Claire McCaskill gets elected she will shut the commercial kennels down!

Peter Beagle Interview — Day One
Joy

Peter Beagle

Welcome to a new interview series! Its been a while since the last one and this is one I think you’re going to enjoy! Our guest this time is Peter Beagle, one of this generation’s absolute best writers. Peter wrote The Last Unicorn and A Fine and Private Place, two classics that would have earned him a place in literary history if he had just stopped right there. But of course he didn’t and we’re all the richer for Peter’s continuing to share his stories, his vision and his beautiful soul with the rest of us.

You don’t have to believe me — ask the folks who know a thing or two like fellow author Neil Gaiman or the Science Fiction folks who awarded Peter the Hugo Award this year at the World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles.

By the way, The Last Unicorn is now available on audio book being read by Peter Beagle himself. And he has a fabulous voice for reading! Absolutely mellifluous!

But the one thing I CAN tell you is that interviewing Peter is a once in a lifetime honor. So with that, let me invite you to listen in on our chat about dogs, ducks, cats, horses and life. This is the first part in a series of three parts.
