Update on Dogs Deserve Better Case — Tammy Grimes and Doogie
This just in from the Altoona Mirror.
Dog case headed to trial
ROARING SPRING – Tammy Sneath Grimes will face a jury trial on charges that she stole a dog Sept. 11 from a Freedom Township property.
Grimes appeared in front of Magisterial District Judge Craig Ormsby today. Two of the charges, criminal mischief and criminal trespass, were withdrawn by prosecutors at the start of the hearing.
Ormsby declined attempts by Grimes and her attorney to provide a justification for her actions, saying that is a matter to be heard by the Blair County Court of Common Pleas.About 50 people who support Grimes attended the hearing.
Mirror reporters are working on a story for Friday’s newspaper.
Here’s an article on the court case.

I missed the original story. I want to know why she “allegedly stole” the dog.
A neighbor of “Doogie” had called Tammy Grimes’ organization because Doogie had not been able to get up from the ground for a few days. The neighbor and Ms. Grimes had attempted to contact the local humane society, but to no avail. When Ms. Grimes arrived at Doogie’s house, the owners weren’t home, and he was still unable to get up. She made the decision to take the dog to a vet without the owner’s permission, and refused to return him afterwards to the owner.
The jury would be crazy to find her guilty of anything except maybe saving a dogs life!
I saw a news clip today that Doogie is doing better, even walk although woobley after having vet care. Tammy has him hidden in an undisclosed place.
The world needs more folks like Tammy. All I can say is Go Tammy Go!
Here’s a recent article. In it, the Arnolds claim that Doogie is 19 and they never mistreated him. 19!!??!! Oh come on! I’ve lived with larger dogs most of my life and NEVER seen one that made it to 19 with the BEST of care!
I think the Arnolds are doing a litlle CYA.
I am very disturbed to read on the Best Friends site that the PA breeder & puppy mill lobby is involved in this and supporting anmal abuse!!
Here is the Best Friends page that gives the background and also see the comments at the bottom

The ineptly named Freedom Township police in this case should be jailed for life. In fact, the entire department should be permanently shut down.
If you are getting feedback to the contrary it is likely due to anti-animal-rights extremists who believe that when police break the law and a “mere pet suffers for it, no one should take corrective action. They tend to flame any responsible person who does. But there are some major problems with this perspective. In this case the police:
Ø Refused to respond to more than one call from independent parties concerning Doogie, and the laws his owners clearly broke. (If people can’t depend upon the police to respond to calls, what are we paying them for?)
Ø Refused to even investigate the evidence Ms. Grimes tried to provide them concerning Doogie’s condition once they falsely arrested heroic Ms. Grimes. (Since when is it a crime to save a dog’s life? They should be required to cite the law they thought she was breaking during the life-saving phase of Grimes’ rescue activity.)
Ø One of them made a verbal threat to kill Grimes via a bullet “in her ass. (How would a police officer behave toward an ordinary citizen who made the same threat toward them?)
Ø Did not follow proper procedures during their false arrest of Grimes. (How would a police officer behave toward an ordinary citizen who made a citizen’s arrest of them, without following proper procedures?)
Ø Refused to pursue investigating the Arnolds for neglect that crosses over into abuse. Even the white shepherd at http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com/doogie.html looks worried that he will die next, with the severe neglect to which Doogie in the foreground was subjected.
It is clear their intent is to harass those who obey the law and care about our fellow creatures. And let irresponsible pet owners off the hook. What a reverse to the way most people presume they behave.
Those who are cruel to non-human animals do not stop there: They are a threat to human society as well: http://www.helpinganimals.com/ga_humanAbuse.asp

Doogie is safe, warm, loved, being treated, and doing as well as can be expected. For more info, interview Kim Eicher.
It is to be hoped that Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio will drop all charges against Grimes and file charges for cruelty against the Arnolds based on:
Ø video,
Ø photos,
Ø eye witness accounts, and
Ø Veterinary witness.
I personally would also like to see the police shut down. Permanently.
Sincerely,
Doug Pelter
I think what Tammy did was honorable. I don’t feel the police took her serious because of the way she has promoted getting dogs off chains. They may have felt she was over reacting to gain publicity for her cause. However refuseing to look at her evidence is not very good police work and made their whole department look like something out of a Deliverance movie.I feel that if the vet did indeed check the dog all over he would be able to tell the age of the dog and if some of the conditions it had such as very low weight, was from neglect or poor eating habits. Was it ever proven factual the dog laid without care for 3 days? If not then how did she know the owners were not at home because they might have been out getting medical supplies. I am greatful the dog is doing better and an animal crulety case should be investagated and charges with some sting set forth.
I’ve looked at the video tapes and Jake does seem to be in bad shape that day. But I’ve seen nothing proving he was there for 3 days. If the neighbor was so upset why wasn’t she there and calling on the first day- talking to the neighbors something????
My elderly dog had seizures near the end of his life- looked exactly like what Jake was suffering in that video.
I am seriously concerned that Ms Grimes is not returning Jake to authorities. If he’s doing as wonderfully as stated- why not- that would further support her case that it was abuse. Unless of course he isnt doing so much better! That reported after video didn’t really even look like the same dog to me. I smell a scam and a PR job here- all set up only to support Ms Grimes cause.
The anti-tethering laws that have passed in recent months have done one thing- caused people who used to tether to turn their dogs in to shelters to die. Yup- so glad we’ve helped the dogs out there! Whats next- no kennels, no fences, no leashes…no collars.
This woman broke the law, continues to defy the law, and wants public opinion to sway the law- DEFINITELY NOT a hero in my book. If her only goal was to save this dog- take it to the vet and report it to the authorities and the OWNER. SInce she did not do that- it is pretty obvious helping this dog was the last thing on her mind that day.
I am a Dog Lover, have pages on Dogster and proud to own a business working with animals. I have taken a hard look into the group Dogs Deserve Better and what we are hearing through the animal community might be alot of cut and paste from their camp. I won’t weigh in if this is good or bad, all I ask is you look into yourself, chek out her blogs on youtube (tammyddb) or myspace (Tammy Grimes). Look into the other court case going on with DDB, What the Pennsylvania Assembly has in consideration with DDB. Looking into the work DDB did with Chain OFF 2006, check out what the SPCA thinks. Read more, find out, but please of all things don’t take it for word what thier camp said at first. I really hopes this turns out to be the best, I hope this country has not rallyed around another good cause to have it crushed by deception. thx
Lisa,
Thanks for barking in. If there are things other Dogsters should know about DDB, please feel free to bark in. I reviewed the YouTube and MySpace pages and found nothing I could object to. That was right after the incident with Doogie so if something has changed drastically I would like to know. I’ve also reviewed the DDB site, including Chain-Off.
I haven’t seen anything to make me think that Tammy Grimes is anything other than a concerned activist. If anyone has evidence to the contrary I would like to see it so we can bring everything into the light.
Once again, thank you for barking in Lisa. Please feel free to share any and all pertinent info with your fellow Dogsters.
