Ex Premiership Footballer In Trouble For Missing Game To Mourn Dog
Dog loving footballer Gilles De Bilde has landed himself in trouble with his club Willebroek, who play in the Belgian league, after he missed a game to mourn the death of his dog.
The former Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa player is said to have not turned up for a league game following the death of his dog.
It is not the first time the dog loving star has courted controversy because of his love for dogs. In 1999, after he arrived to play for Sheffield Wednesday, he was exposed by a tabloid for smuggling his two Dobermans through quarantine. Whilst denying the offence, the outspoken footballer said at the time “Quarantine laws are s**t laws because they affect dogs’ health. That’s not a good thing”De Bilde, who was transferred from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven to Sheffield Wednesday for £3m in 1999, is famous in the football community for his passion for animal welfare. He has used his profile in Europe to campaign for a European ban on cat and dog fur.

Now here is a sports figure worthy of being a hero. Funny..we get used to hearing them get in trouble with the law, & they go back to their games with little or no consequences. Here is one with a heart & compassion…and in trouble because of it. Guess they would have preferred him to get in trouble with, drugs or some such thing. God forbid you are seen as having a heart. Shame on you Club Willebroek.
what a role model for kids! gr8 sports star and has gr8 love for animals! hope he isnt in much trouble, but glad the media spotlighted his compassionate heart, in this situation!
People are expected to take time off when a human loved one dies to mourn. For myself and countless others I am sure, animals are an integral part in most family dynamics as much as human family members. Maybe if Gilles comitted an actual crime he might not have gotten in so much trouble!
I took a few days off work when my Izzabella passed and everyone at work thought/thinks I am crazy.
I am still mourning her passing and am quite sensitive about it. People can be so cold.

I think I can speak for a lot of us at Dogster when I say we understand what you’re going through. I am so sorry for your loss. I’ve been through it many times and it always hurts.
I can say that time dulls the edges some so that the pain isn’t so sharp. If course I say that and three years now since my Nigel passed to the Bridge and I still get all teary if I think about him longer than a minute.
Please know that we do understand your pain because we have been there.
If you haven’t already, you may want to check out some of the excellent Dogster groups for loved ones at the bridge. They have lots of very caring, concerned Dogsters and Catsters who feel as deeply as anyone about their passed furbabies.
Warm hugs from my pack to you.
