Dogster Jasmine barked in to tell us all about a chance to bring national exposure to a current dog rescue situation — the Lebanese dogs being flown in to the States! Thanks Jasmine for sharing the bark!
Hi Annie! Can you please pass this along to other pups via the DogBlog? I’d really like to see a dog-rescue story on national news, and this seems like a great oppurtunity. This is what I’ve been askin’ pups in the forums:

Here’s an update about the amazingly ill-conceived AKC deal with the Petland chain of pet stores. It seems the AKC management have heard all the complaints from across the US from many breed clubs and backed away from the arrangement.
Way to go Dogsters and everyone else who growled their upset into the AKC! You made the difference! You’re the reason puppy mills and their middle demons like the Hunte Corporation will not be legitimized any more than they already are in pet stores like Petland. Good work! Keep up the good work! Working like a pack we can make a difference!
Thanks to Roxie’s mom, Karen for barking in!

Hi Joy,
I’m not sure if you have seen this but it looks like AKC has pulled back and is not going through with the Petland agreement. Once again the voices of reason have been heard.

Dogsters are some of the most caring people anywhere and when one of our Dogsters are suffering, I can guarantee you that there are other Dogsters feeling their pain. Such is the case of Seva. Seva is an older Dogster who is experiencing some serious heatlh problems. In true Dogster fashion another Dogster is concerned and barked in. Thanks to Francis Rocks and the bipedess for letting us all know about Seva.
My heart and thoughts go out to Seva and her family.

Sometimes its easy to forget that there are tons of people around the world just like us trying to make a difference for our furry friends and loved ones. Here’s an article from the IFAW’s Animal Rescue Blog about TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society). Its a ray of sunshine! The TEARS people sound like people we’d all like to know!
New Hope for Pets in South Africa
Hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats are without veterinary care in South Africa; an impossible number to count or even estimate. These animals (particularly dogs) are kept as pets and used for a variety of reasons: security, companionship, hunting, fighting, etc. Therefore even those with homes are not properly cared for.

Thanks to NBC2.com for an update on another DUIS (driving under the influence of stupidity) animal abuser.
Here’s another case of an animal abuser whining that he’s getting treated too harshly. He seems to think he should just get some sort of symbolic fine and go about his life. WRONG! Thank dogness that the judge has better sense than that!
How many kinds of wrong can you see here? Start with dragging the family dog behind a car. Go on to letting 15-year-old son drive AND drive while dragging the dog! Talk about some family values! AND then you have the defense attornenys wondering WHY the defendant was actually given jail time. (I have a lawyer in the family so I have nothing against lawyers in general. In fact, Lynn would probably be the FIRST one to tell you to strap a chain on the defendant and take HIM for a ride!)
The only bright side to all this is that justice seems to be finding itself a niche here. Check out the defendant’s financial life after all this.
Man receives jail time after dragging dog behind car
LEE COUNTY: It is the end of a long court battle for the owner of an abused dog. However, it was not exactly the outcome dog owner Jeffrey Candler was hoping for. The case has many defense attorneys stumped because they are wondering why Candler is serving any jail time for a second degree misdemeanor.

If you can get SKY News you can support efforts to stop potential Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in the UK!
You may have noticed the recent rush to ban Rottweilers and others supposedly “dangerous dogs” in the UK. For those of us not living in the UK, there were two recent Rottweiler attacks on children. The press is having a feeding frenzy playing off the fears of some of the public.
One magazine is trying to be a bastion of sanity — K9 Magazine. They are calling for an ownership test to have dogs. How sane is that? Here’s the link to that article. Excellent rant by the way about WHY BSL doesn’t work!
So how can you help? K-9 Magazine Editer Ryan O’Meara is going to be appearing on several TV shows over the weekend. He’ll be speaking against BSL and trying to add some sanity to calm the media chaos. If you can watch and then call in afterwards to support him and the position, you can be one voice speaking peace. He’s told me that some of the shows don’t have set times to appear but one important one does — 10:40 AM on SKY NEWS. You can tune in, root for Ryan and then text message or phone in afterwards.

SeattlePi.com reports that the Maryland candidates for the US Senate are doggedly fighting it out with, well, dogs. More precisely, Boston terriers.

Dog stars in ads for Md. candidates
By KRISTEN WYATT
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
Talk about a dogged race - a Boston terrier is starring in campaign ads for both the Democrat and Republican in Maryland’s Senate contest.
Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele started the puppy parade earlier this month, airing a commercial that poked fun at negative advertising. He is running against Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Paul Sarbanes.

School funds used for dog come under question
By Stephanie Hutson, Staff Writer
It doesn’t seem like a prim-and-proper white poodle should cause such a fuss, but Lakeside Elementary’s school pet, Buddy, has some parents questioning the principal’s allocation of funds to the dog’s expenses.
Lakeside’s principal, Mark Lukert, stands by the school’s spending and approached the microphone at Tuesday night’s public meeting with a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 150.
