IAMS Tartar Treats? — Pro or Con?
Is this the new Greenie? Henry barked in about an IAMS product. Has anyone else had any problems with Tarter Treats?
Hello,
My adorable Yorkshire Terrier, Ziggy, ate a Tartar Treats (to clean teeth) from the dog company IAMS and began vomiting a few hours later. I believe now that a Tartar Treat was stuck in his small intestine. We have had three visits to the vet and many tests to find out why he has been vomiting for the last month but to no avail. An ultrasound finally confirmed a blockage and our dog had it removed 5 days ago by surgery. Because of this blockage he had to have his gall bladder removed.
IAMS has pictures of this 4 inch length obstruction that I sent them. It looks like a rubbery piece of bacon the same color as a Tartar Treat and with 6 curved parts, the same number of teeth as a Tartar Treat . IAMS won’t confirm it is theirs and are indicating it is not from the pictures I sent them. They want me to send it to them, I’m concerned because it is the only proof I have. Should we send half of it? We love Ziggy and he has suffered greatly in the last month and would like to know if this has happened to others and possibly have IAMS put out a warning on their product?
Our bills are about $2,400 so far not including grief and misery for a month. We are stuck and don’t know what to do.
Do I need a lawyer? Is it worth using a lawyer? Thank-you.
Henry Kaszel

Just a long shot…..but if you have access to an ‘independent’ laboratory in your area….maybe you
could slice of a piece of the ‘offending treat’ and take a
brand new IAMS treat and have both tested. They should
be able to determine if the ingredients are EXACT. I’m not
sure what the cost of something like this would be, but
maybe in the interest of public safety they would do it
for free. But, no, I wouldn’t send them what was retrieved
from Ziggy, not even a piece of it. (Always, always, keep
the evidence in your possession) And if the ‘treat’
analysis matched, then I’d for sure go find a lawyer and a
very interested reporter. (This is from someone who has
experience in battling “Goliath”)
Please everyone be aware that ALL chewie dog treats must be adequately chewed by the dog or it may cause obstruction. This is not greenie dependent, this applies to rawhide, cow hooves, dentabones, and any other chew treat. If your dog is not a chewer, you should think twice before giving it to them, and you should always supervise your dog when giving these treats. They can be so helpful if used properly, but they are all at risk for obstruction if your dog doesn’t chew them. Also, if you have multiple dogs, the competition of another dog nearby may encourage them to swallow without chewing into small pieces.
we feed iams food and bought a container thing and it came with one of those tarter treats. i have never feed greenies and i wasn’t sure whether they were the same sort of thing. so i tossed it. this week in the flyers i saw a coupon for a free pouch of them. i was going to post about them to ask other dogsters but i didn’t. i tossed the coupon too! i figured we’re fine with our iams treats so why take the chance. i’m now glad i did!!!!!! is your dog going to be o.k.? i would take a piece and send to them not the whole thing, keep some of it for sure. that’s the only evidence you have!!!
good luck! can you see if it’s the same as their treats?
i have given both dogs these treats and have had no problems.both of my dogs have perfectly white teth from this tooth toys, toothbrushing, etc.
I picked up some of these IAMS treats for both dogs, thinking I’d better start to do something about their teeth. The smaller dog had one yesterday morning, vomited this morning, and just had a bout of the runs that looks suspiciously like there may be blood in the stools. I’m horrified.

Thanks for barking in! I know some folks like Brutis thankfully haven’t had any problems with these kinds of chewies but I’m keeping my distance. In fact, the owner of the pet store I visit the most just about offered me free Greenies and I won’t touch them.
I really like a product that Drs. Foster and Smith (www.drsfosterandsmith.com) sell that is an enzymatic wipe. Its a round cotton wipe that you rub on the dogs’ teeth. It decreases plaque formation. The dogs don’t seem to mind them too much and they’re pretty easy to use. They also seem to work.
Thanks for your story. My dog is an over enthusiastic treat eater as well. The other day, she coughed up a huge chunk of one of these treats alomg with a fair amount of bile. Unlike in your case, ours was fully recogniable still. I will be disposing of the remaining supply, I know we can’t afford a $2400 vet bill!
I think it definitely depends on the dog and how they consume it. Luckily my 25 lb 12 year old German Pinscher takes at least 10 minutes to eat one. She holds it between her paws and chews off little pieces and then chews the pieces like gum. I never knew her teeth could be so white! Even professional cleaning under anesthesia didn’t produce the effect I’ve gotten by giving her 2-3 a week. I know this sounds like I work for the company, but I don’t. I just stumbled across this web page while searching for a place to buy these treats cheaper, cuz they are pricey. I do see where they would be hard to digest if your dog woofs it down.
My Bichon also got a piece of Iams tarter treat lodged in her small intestine and recently had to have surgery to have it removed. The piece that was removed was hard. She was sick and vomiting for 3 weeks and in pain and she almost died. 6000.00 dollars in vet bills later. I would not recommend this treat
I’m not sure that IAMS is at fault. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations. IAMS tartar treats are not recommended for dogs under 10 lbs. I seriously doubt that your yorkie weighs that much.
Iams will not claim it is they’re fault, & I know you feel like it is & that is completely understantable. I have been giving Eduardo these treats & greenies for awhile, you just have to watch them. Eduardo sometimes eats his treats intirely too fast so when he gets these treats I watch him like a hawk, thank God he’s a chewer & he loves to chew the edges, the sides, everywhere. I’m sorry this happened to your dog, but I don’t think you should get a lawyer, I think Iams will build a case too tough to defeat because they have seen this before & you will just lose money. God bless you & Ziggy.

I give my small dog these treats and he loves them!! He likes to play hide and seek with them and then eventually eats them, by holding it in between his paws and slowly chewing.
