This just in from DogFlu.ca — Belgrade is taking the humane approach to the stray dog issue. DO you think some Chinese officials could learn a few things from these folks?

Belgrade city officials are planning to take steps to reduce the city’s stray dog population

The city of Belgrade located in the country of Serbia is planning a mass dog spaying and neutering program. Currently the city is dealing with an abundant supply of stray dogs and plan to do something humane about the situation instead of taking the more drastic approach.

The plan is to spay or neuter, microchip and vaccinate over 4000 dogs over the next two years. The plan is set to kick into action at the start of September, with a monthly goal of spaying or neutering at least 250 dogs.

Taking the program one step further, approximately 50000 dog owners will be given free microchips for their dogs.

I could use a microchip for when my lab takes herself for long walks without me. I hope it works out.

Yes I’m delighted about this. Strays have been a problem but some people have been laying down poison which is a truly terrible way to remedy dogs barking at night in residential areas.

I’m glad that Belgrade authorities are doing the right and responsible thing - after all many of these dogs were released onto the streets when, during the wars and sanctions, people found they were no longer able to afford feeding them.

In this part of the world there isnt much in terms of animal friendly policies. For this reason I give this positive development three woofs!
