Dogsters Sabrina and Veronica Announce Winner of Portait Contest

A little while ago Sabrina and Veronica announced they were giving away a portrait by artist Kathryn Beals. I just got this in from Veronica announcing the winner and all the runners-up and honorable mentions.

Hi Joy, I said I’d bark back when I chose the winner of the portrait contest, and it’s been chosen! Here’s the message I posted in the thread
Wow, pups, what a hard decision! So many awesome pictures– 237 to be exact!
I had such a hard time deciding that I took a page from Casey… For each of the top nine pups I assigned each pup a stuffie of Sabrina’s. Then I arranged the stuffies around the room, let Sabrina in and the one she chose is the winner. And the winner is……
*drumroll*
Zeus

Congratulations Zeus! Thanks to Veronica and Sabrina for graciously donating the portrait! And thanks to all those Dogsters who competed!

Congrats to Zeus!!! Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving doggie!
I’m just wondering if anyone other than me notices that this chosen picture isn’t outside nor is the whole animal in the shot as bolded criteria on the photo guide states. Sabrina’s owner stated to “Make sure the picture is appropriate to be turned into a painting by looking at the page starring Sabrina about how to pick a picture.
I think Zeus’s picture is perfect, I can practically see the painting already !!
Don’t be a sore loser.

Well to make a statement like that you could at least be known!! How ungrateful and jealous you make yourself sound!!! I have not been on Dogster a while and thought i would come and see how Sabrina did with her wonderful competition, and what do you know, someone just can’t be happy for everyone!!
Sabrina & Veronica, that was truely a terrific way to spread some Dogster Love, how fantastic you have made everydog feel, and to the Winner you have just helped make their day!!! Congratulations to all of you, this is what Dogster is all about!!!!
Actually, I remember going to the website with the “suggestions” and it wasn’t necessarily a requirement that the picture be taken outside. Simply that natural light tends to create the best pics. As for having the entire dog in the pic, it was recommended. But, it was also mentioned that if you did want just a head shot that was acceptable. I think Zeus’s pic is great. The lighting is good, the detail is good, and you can get a very good idea of his true coloring and markings. It’s almost a “charicature” because his head appears so big compared to his body. Yeah for Zeus! and the great pic by his human.
Thanks everypup for sticking up for me! I did use the site as a guide, and like other pups are saying it says certain things are reccomended but not required. I also checked with the artist before making the final picks to make sure all of the ones I thought would make good paintings actually would, and she OKed every one of them! Congrats Zeus and all the runners up and honorable mentions– it was a great contest and I had so much fun looking at all the wonderful pictures! I only wish I could have given out more than one!
Veronica and Sabrina,
Thank you for exhibiting wonderful Dogster friendliness and sharing! Lovely contest and I can’t wait to see the portrait of Zeus!
Zeus, you are a beautiful dog, as were all the dogs mentioned in the top 8 runners up and top 16 honorable mentions. Lovely photographs and lucky owners to have such beautiful dogs they care about so much.
Of course I was eagerly watching this competition and sad my own puppies did not make it, as were all 238 entrants who didn’t win I’m sure. I will always be partial to my own puppies but I’m still cheering for the dog who won, Zeus.
I did want to point out one thing that dissapointed me about this because of all those entrants only 1 black dog made it to the top 25. I know black dogs are hard to photograph, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a nice picture in the outside light. I know Sabrina herself is a dark dog, although not black. There were a couple other brown dogs with black faces in the top 25. I guess I just felt this lack of black dogs was probably another subconsious manifestation of the black dog syndrome, of overlooking black dogs. Not that the top dogs weren’t beautiful, but why weren’t there more black dogs?
Just please be aware and don’t overlook black dogs around you who need love and attention. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional in this contest. I’m excited to see the adorable Zeus be painted and the artist does such beautiful work; please don’t think I’m like the anon poster and all critical because I’m bitter. I just want to stick up for black dogs everywhere and I hope other dogsters will help in raising awareness of the cuteness and lovability of overlooked black dogs (esp those in shelters who need good homes).
