Dog Scouts of America

Miss those old boy or girl scout days? Well now you can have a new scouting experience — Dog Scouts. The Dog Scouts of America are:
dedicated to educating the public about responsible dog ownership and the important role of the human/canine bond.
This is an organization for all you Dogsters (two- and four-legged) who want to get out there an be ACTIVE!
Dog Scouts of America (DSA) was established in 1995. It is a non-profit organization of people who are dedicated to enriching their lives and the lives of others with dogs. Founder, Lonnie Olson, has hade it her life’s ambition to experience as many dog sports and skills as possible with her dogs. If you believe that dogs really enjoy learning new things and spending time with their owners, you’re our kind of dog person. Dogs were not meant to be “furniture.” Working dogs want to work. Without having an acceptable activity in which to use up all of that energy that comes “built-in” with a dog, our canine companions often get into trouble. By better understanding how your dog thinks, how he learns, and what drives his behavior, and by participating in a variety of dog sports and activities, you will become a more responsible dog owner. We hope to prevent misunderstandings, communication failures and behavioral problems which often lead to dogs being given up as a “lost cause.”
They even have badges! How cool is that!?! But before you get too excited about making up a sash to put them on, you should know the badges are for the dogs, not you. But hey, you get to have the fun of helping your furbabies earn those badges!
If any Dogsters are Dog Scouts, bark in and tell us about your experiences!

Hello!
Someone told me about your message on dog scouts and I was very surprised!
I just got back from Dog Scout camp last week and boy was it fun! This was our first time going, but we’ve been members of Dog Scouts and with local troop for several years now. DSA is a wonderful organization which promotes responsible pet ownership.
I will be posting about our experience in the Dogster Dogs & Travel forum and in my dog Ginger’s Dogster Diary! Her full name on Dogster is “Ginger CGC, TD, TT, DSA” The DSA means that she is a certified Dog Scout. You can see a photo of her in her Dog Scout vest with badges on her Dogster page!
(as soon as I upload it, at least…)
I plan to start a troop in the Windsor Ontario area very soon
I just recently started a troop in Moorhead, MN-Fargo, ND. We’re still learning the basics so we can earn our DSA certification and wear our bandanas, but positive training is new to our area and Dog Scouts has really helped us learn a lot about it. We can’t wait to go backpacking and swimming!
Just got back from Dog Scout Camp….2nd time and already signed up for next year. Great people, lots of fun. Great canines, leanring and laughs. Already ordered my Springer to continue biking with Bonnie.
I went to Dog Scout Camp in 2003 and had a blast!! I learned to paint and to carry a backpack, two skills that I still use. My paintings are donated to animal charity auctions and I try to backpack at least once a week with my Mommy. You can read about my camp experiences at http://www.geocities.com/bendulac/campdiary.htm

4 of my 5 dogs are certified as Dog Scouts and we have a blast doing Dog Scout stuff. I am the troop leader for the Ohio- Indiana- Kentucky tri-state troop and we have lots of fun activities: Walks in local parks almost every weekend, meetings (with education and fun) every month, swim outings, kayak/canoe trips (with the dogs of course!), campouts (in cabins that allow dogs), parties, and fundraisers just to name a few of the things we do.
DSA membership is very reasonable and you can earn bages from any where in the world through the use of videotape and written tests (if there is not a Scoutmaster near you.) The dogand parent do need to pass their Dog Scout test before the badge forms for the other badges can be turned in. But you can work on any of the badges at any time, even if it’s just for fun (no badge.) DSA promotes learning and positive training so check out the MANY articles on the main website http://www.DogScouts.org

Join today! Your dog(s) will Love it and so will you!
We also just got back from camp and signed up for next year when we get our 3 year pin! Robbie could be a poster dog for Dog Scouts — he went from a shy and insecure shelter dog to a confident and interactive performance dog after learning that “training” means rewards and fun times, not punishment (or whatever happened to him in his previous life). Where else can your dog learn to paint or play a musical instrument or even win an Oscar in a talent contest! If you never thought you could have too much fun with your dog, they you’ve never been to Dog Scout camp!
I would like to see how many Dog Scouts are on Dogster!
If you have a dog scout (or future dog scout) who is on Dogster, please tag one or some of your photos “dog scout” so everyone can know that you are involved with Dog Scouts of America!
If you don’t know how to tag a photo, here is what Dogster’s FAQ says:
“To add tags to your photos, go to your Account page. Click on the ‘Add/edit photo tags’ link next to your pet’s picture (Plus members can select the Photo Manager link). Then, add tags!”
Once people have added photo tags, you can go to “Search Photo Tags” link from the main page of Dogster and put in “dog scouts” to see all the photos!
I have already done this with a few of Ginger’s photos. I hope to see many more dog scouts here soon…
We just started a new troop in Austin, Texas! I met Lonnie Olson when I was out in Sequim studying with Terry Ryan and I fell in love with the concept of Dog Scouts. What a great way to help people increase their bond with their dogs and spread the word about responsible dog ownership in a way that is fun and relaxing! I hope every city and town has a Dog Scouts Troop soon - the things we do can truly help to stop the problem with overpopulation of dogs and with surrender of dogs to shelters.
Legacy Canine Training and Behavior has started a Dog Scouts troop and will be offering the first DogScout camp on the west coast this summer, July 6-8, in Sequim, Washington. We hope maybe some of you will come and visit us and join in! We’re all looking forward to a good time. We’ll have some of our own special troop badges (The Hunt for Sasquatch and Skateboarding), great hikes, and Northwest Native American arts and crafts. Email our program coordinator Jenni at jenni@legacycanine.com for registration information.
God site. Thanks!
