Dogster Member Needs Advice on Canine Jewelry
One of your fellow Dogsters wrote in to ask for advice on ear piercing for dogs. Connors asks:
Shasta and I love jewellery. I have been using the magnetic earring on Shasta and she loves it. I only put it on her one ear. What I was wondering, is there a safe procedure for actually having her one ear pierced? I only use tiny, non dangling earrings so they cannot catch on anything. If so, what type of place would I go to to have this done?
I live in Ontario, Canada, so please no USA addresses please.
Thank you.
Okay, Dogsters, we need some help here. I don’t even have MY ears pierced so I wouldn’t know where to start on this subject for the furkids. Bark out and help Connors and Shasta with some advice.

Connors: I’d be checking with your vet, I’ve never heard of this done before. Even if you could find someone to pierce your dogs ear, I’d check with the vet first. Casually ask at your dogs next appointment what they think.
I’ll second Connors. I’d check with a vet first. Jewelry is tricky on dogs.
Piercings hurt. Why would you want to cause your dog pain for something that has no asthetic value to her?!
I second Rachel why would you do that if it hurts and if your dog doesn’t even care??? Besides I AM a vet and that would hurt the dog very much, the dog wouldn’t stand still and it could cause damage.
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!! 3
I had the same idea for my chihuahua, she just sits pretty all day and loves to be paid attention and dressed up. And it would have aesthetic value! I mean consider all the ways people shave their dogs down and its all itchy etc. for “aesthetic value” so that is in the eye of the beholder. And I would not take the advice of a “sycholigist” whatever that it is!
I was actually thinking of doing that to my westie and i brought it up to my vet aka my boss and he said he’d do it. He suggests doing it under sedation so therefore its painless for the pup. I wouldn’t only put her down for this though; getting a microchip put in and a deep nail trim along with that will make putting my dog under more beneficial. The only thing stopping me from doing it today is that i worry about whether she’ll rip them out. She likes to play rough so i’m still hesitant. But in short i would ask your vet to do it. I think its so cute. Yeah it may be a little painful if there’s no sedation, but babies get it done all the time. And i can surely say that my dog is my baby.
I absolutely think it is a great idea. I was in Neimans the other day and this lady had her chi chi with her. Me being a dog lover I had to ask to see it. It was a male and had his ear pierced twice. Just the left one but twice. And EXCUSE ME he had two DIAMONDS. Even though it was a male it looked so darn cute.
I have 4 and two are just DIVA’S. So I am also wanting to do it. Gonna run it by my vet first. So go for it.
My baby alex was a mixed terrier , she had her ears pierced and had a full assortment of earrings that she wore on a daiy basis . I pierced them my self when she was about 6 weeks old she lived for 17years and as far as i know she never suffered because of the piercing , If you do pierce your dogs ears only use good earrings as dogs have a different ph from humans , I pierced her ears with earrings made for an Inverness ear piercing gun and always kept 14kt gold in her ears . Me vet always was amazed at the variety of her jewelry .
i want to know WHERE to get it down not what u think!!!!
I was also considering get my Yorkie’s ear pierced but like you I dont know where to go…i know i am not being location helpful but i am giving morale support. I agree babies get there ears pierced all the time. I have 6 holes and i got my first 2 when i was 6 weeks. Its a piercing! for crying out loud she is not thinking tattooing the doggie!
James, i was wondering what anticeptic did you use on your dog when you got it pierced, and did you do it yourself and how. let me know. Thanks.
ps. and christina hoocked on fonics woked fow me!!!
I used neosporan and that was all that i used . I pierced her ears my self using the earrings that Inverness guns use they have a needle like point on them . My dog was very mellow she was a sweetheart ,I was able to change her jewelry on a daily basis she had a large variety of earrings . I only used stud earrings on her . I also have done several other dogs and 2 cats ears using the earrings that come from mexico that people use on infants, these have a sharp point and a ball that screws on
Hi-
For sure its a good idea. I have had a mini pin for 16 yrs that I just had to be put down because she was sick and she had an earing in since she was 6 months old. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF !!! that is cruel. Talk to your vet and hope he is cool but money talks if He/she gives you a hard time. The old mini pin that I had “cloi” had it on the bottom portion of her ear and there are to many vessels that run through there . It took her appx one month for it to heal . I even had to put her on antibiotics. I just recently purchased 2 mini pins. A blue one “GEENIE” and a black one “CORY”. When it was time to spay them I told my vet to do it but only if i promised never to tell anyone what he did. I figurewd that If you place it on the top portion of the ear where there is extra skin there is absolutely no infection. But you really need to get it when they are puppies so they can get used to it. If not i do not suggest it If you would like I can send you pictures of them. Not because they are mine, but they are really cute! good luck
I do not understand why on earth you’d want to put your pets through something like that. For those of you with piercings, do you remember the soreness? The possibility of infection? The fact that dogs ears are made of much, much softer, more delicate tissue than human ears?
You’re supposed to care for your pets, not use them to accessorize yourself. Jesus.
Could someone please send me a picture of a
dog with pierced ears, that interests me. How-
ever, I want to see the area to get pierced.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a Jack Russel mix who’s ears stick up. I want to get her ears pierced but I also want it to be safe for her. I called her vet today and the receptionist had never heard of dog ear piercing, but she thought it sounded so cute! Now I need to check other vets and see if they’ll do it. I’m nervous about doing it myself. I agree with other statements that if parents can get their babies pierced right out of the womb, will it really hurt a dog that much more? As long as you take care of cleaning it, it should only hurt for a second as it’s pierced, right?
oh please, I would love to pierce my 2 new kittens ears. People pierce baby’s all the time. Cruelty is when you don’t take of your kitten, or dog, truethfully, what is the big problem with it. If a vet will do it, so then do it. Vicki
I am a veterinary technician. I’ve had clients ask to have it done. We can’t do it ethically, as our oath states we will not harm a dog. Sticking a sharp object into the sensitive skin and flesh of an animal for no medical reason is harm. And yes, it hurts. Dog ears are not the same as human ears. Also, there is a significant chance of infection, as dog ears are hairy, and dog’s don’t know not to scratch at it, lay on the dirt, etc with it. It will hurt for a while, and like I said, is risking infection and not providing a medical benefit, which goes against the veterinary oath.
look up dog clothes, their are outfits that say sexie. i don’t get it. when a dog and a baby be old enough to choose for the right reasons about why they want to be peirced then i think it would be cool
